The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world! The HPC Division provides production high performance computing systems services to the Laboratory. The HPC Division is seeking an R&D Manager 3 to serve as Deputy Group Leader and partner with the Group Leader to meet programmatic objectives via excellent technical management, personnel safety, security, and compliance in all areas associated with High Performance Computing. You will be a valuable member of the HPC division management team and will report to the Group Leader. Your work starts with the early phases of acquisition, development, and production readiness of HPC platforms, and continues through the maintenance and operation of these systems and the facilities in which they are housed. HPC Division also manages the network, parallel file systems, storage, and visualization infrastructure associated with the HPC platforms. The Division directly supports the Laboratory's HPC user base and aids, at multiple levels, in the effective use of HPC resources to generate science. Additionally, we support selected research activities that we deem important to our mission.
Deputy Group Leaders (DGL) are key members and contributors in the leadership team responsible for supporting the strategic direction for the group, providing oversight on R&D initiatives, working with, and supporting the group and division leadership, developing, and maintaining good customer and cross-organizational relations, promoting a strong safety, security, and ethics culture, and assisting the group and division office on other duties as assigned.
Deputy Group Leader responsibilities include:
- Contributor in supporting the strategic direction for the group, providing oversight/coordination on technical initiatives to assure resources and capabilities, coordinating communication across organizational boundaries to promote quality customer service
- Participate in organizational management, including budgeting, forecasting and financial management, capabilities and staff development, succession planning, personnel, and salary management, performance appraisal, human resources management, mentoring, coaching, and building effective teams, and ensuring a safe and secure workplace
- Promote customer and cross-organizational relations, a strong safety, security, and ethics culture, and assist the senior management with other duties as assigned
The position is funded with the expectation that the successful candidate will assist the group leader in managing the group and may engage in active and funded programmatic technical research at approximately 50%.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Leadership
- Experience as a key contributor on cross-functional R&D teams consisting of computing scientists, professionals, and technicians providing innovative solutions.
- Informing a variety of stakeholders, including the ability to evolve your thinking, influence and motivate others, and/or gain acceptance in sensitive situations while fostering strong relationships.
- Experience as a key contributor in the development and execution of vision, strategic plans, and goals for your group/team.
Technical Excellence
Leadership level knowledge of at least one of the following areas exercised in a large scale production computing environment:
- HPC computing system administration
- Application of computing and/or infrastructure configuration management at large scales
- High performance networking in an HPC setting
- Parallel archival storage systems
- DOE/Government and/or large scale computing procurement activities
- 24/7 data center and/or HPC system operations
- HPC programming environments
- HPC user consulting/help desk
- HPC software tools and applications support
- HPC systems and environmental monitoring
- HPC cyber security
- Parallel data archives
- Serial and parallel file systems
- HPC workload management/scheduling
- HPC operational support: Hardware, support, logistics, monitoring etc.
Business Management
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff to set and achieve organizational goals.
Communication and Collaboration Skills
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and external customers. An accomplished record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams.
Security Clearance
- Active DOE Q clearance desired or clear ability to obtain. This typically requires U.S. citizenship.
- Experience working in a classified computing environment.
Education and Years of Relevant Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of governmental policies and procedures, particularly those related to personnel management, budget oversight, safety, and security, environment, and community relations.
- Experience with large scale simulation of complex physical processes
- Prior experience directing the administration of research and development employees including, forecasting staffing requirements, directing assignments, assuring workforce development, monitoring performance, and initiating personnel actions.
- Leadership level knowledge of at least two of the following areas exercised in a large scale production computing environment:

Work Location:
This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
