We are seeking a talented and experienced AI (Artificial Intelligence) focused Solutions Architect with a strong background in technical solution leadership and technical implementation. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of cloud platforms, such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, and proficiency in AI technologies including working with Large Language Models (LLMs), loosely coupled cloud architectures, and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions. As the Lead Solutions Architect, you will establish and lead the AI Solutions Hub at LANL. This pioneering function will drive the integration of AI into operational domains, transforming innovative concepts into fully realized AI solutions. The Hub will offer end-to-end services, including prompt engineering, data manipulation, model training, and quality assurance, to deliver adaptable, user-friendly AI applications and foster peer collaboration. You will play a key role in forging strategic partnerships with national labs, industry leaders, and academia, while advancing AI innovation in alignment with LANL's mission and maintaining strong ties with the National Security AI Office and other stakeholders.
Solutions Architect 4 ($135,300 - $227,700)
- AI Solution Design: Lead the design and architecture cloud-based AI services to serve both science and internal operations-focused AI tools deployments.
- Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and guidance to development teams throughout the entire project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with best practices and architectural principles.
- Collaboration: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including mission stakeholders, software engineers, contractors, and data scientists to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Cloud Expertise: Utilize expertise in cloud computing to architect scalable, reliable, and cost-effective AI solutions with tools like Azure OpenAI, Azure ML, Azure AI Studio, AWS SageMaker.
- Ability to configure and demonstrate AI tools and services to meet customer needs.
- Security and Compliance: Ensure that AI solutions meet security and compliance requirements, implementing robust security measures and adhering to relevant regulations and standards.
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest advancements in AI, cloud computing, and related technologies, evaluating their potential impact and relevance to the organization's objectives.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Senior Solutions Architect or similar role, with a strong background in cloud computing.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or Google Cloud, including services relevant to AI and machine learning.
- Compliance and Security Experience: History of experience designing solutions for operation in highly regulated security and compliance environments.
- Expertise in AI technologies and frameworks, particularly open source Large Language Models, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) tools, and ChatGPT Enterprise.
- Strong understanding of software architecture principles, data management design patterns, and AI best practices.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Experience with agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and solve complex technical challenges.
- Certification in relevant cloud platforms and AI technologies is a plus.
Position requires a bachelor's degree and 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 Year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
