The Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering (PIE) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.
As a Systems Engineering Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers to support various aspects of nuclear facility systems engineering. Your role will involve assisting in the development of functional analyses, system requirements, and design criteria for nuclear facilities. This internship provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's engineering education. - Support development of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes in an operating nuclear facility.
- Assist in developing functional and system analyses to define facility and system design requirements using MBSE methodology.
- Support the establishment of verification methods for requirements implementation, including acceptance criteria.
- Contribute to the preparation of system and facility design criteria documents.
- Aid in system-level design verification, requirements verification, and requirements traceability.
- Participate in technical discussions to resolve system and model design issues.
- Research and document system operations and limits through review of design documents and discussions with system designers.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in one of the following areas: systems engineering, Industrial Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
- Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies in the relevant field
- Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Desired Qualifications:
- Coursework in systems engineering methodology, engineering design, nuclear systems, thermal-hydraulics, or radiation analysis.
- Familiarity with nuclear industry and regulations standards.
- Experience with engineering design calculations, specifications, or process diagrams.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
