Accelerator Electrical Designer/Drafter 3
- Req. Number: IRC146088
- Organization : AOT-IC/Instrumentation & Controls
- City, State: Los Alamos, New Mexico
- Salary: $66,100 - $103,600
At the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), engineers, technologists, technicians, and designers operate and modernize an 800-MeV proton accelerator complex that supports national security, isotope production, proton radiography, materials research, neutron science, future accelerator missions, and more.
The selected candidate will join the Controls and Timing Systems Team within the Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC), part of LANL's Accelerator Operations and Technology Division. AOT-IC develops and supports controls, instrumentation, beam-diagnostics electronics, printed circuit boards, electronic and mechanical CAD capabilities, data acquisition, and network and timing-signal distribution for a large, distributed, timing-critical accelerator facility.
This role focuses on 2D electrical and electronic system documentation for accelerator controls and instrumentation. Wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, cable and harness drawings, and system interconnection diagrams are expected to make up most of the work, particularly in support of the LANSCE Accelerator Modernization Project (LAMP). Mechanical drawings and 3D models may also be needed as project requirements change. You will work closely with engineers, technologists, technicians, installers, and fabricators to turn requirements, sketches, and field information into accurate design packages.
Work may include:
- Creating and revising 2D electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, electronic schematics, and system interconnection diagrams for accelerator controls and instrumentation
- Developing cable and harness drawings, connector pinouts, equipment layouts, and related assembly documentation to support fabrication, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance
- Using Product Data Management (PDM) tools to manage drawing revisions, document relationships, review and approval workflows, and released design records
- Applying LANL requirements and applicable drafting standards, with attention to electrical symbols, equipment and wire identification, cross-references, notes, and configuration control
- Performing field walkdowns and as-built verification to reconcile installed wiring and equipment with drawings and update system documentation
- Working with customers and multidisciplinary teams to define documentation requirements and resolve drawing, connection, and equipment interface issues
- Supporting design reviews, drawing checks, fabrication readiness, estimating, scheduling, installation, and closeout
- Creating mechanical drawings, layouts, or 3D models and supporting materials and fabrication decisions when needed for associated hardware
- Managing multiple assignments with changing priorities, operational needs, schedules, and customer requirements
- Supporting electrical documentation and hardware modernization work for LANSCE and other AOT customers
- This position offers the opportunity to make a visible contribution to the reliability, maintainability, and modernization of a nationally important accelerator facility while working on a wide range of one-of-a-kind hardware and infrastructure.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create and revise technical drawings and design documentation
- Working knowledge of drafting principles, including drawing conventions, symbols, labels, cross-references, dimensions, notes, and the clear communication of design intent
- Experience producing drawings for electrical or electronic systems, controls, instrumentation, electromechanical assemblies, equipment layouts, or other relevant hardware
- Ability to read and interpret engineering sketches, schematics, specifications, technical standards, assembly information, and manufacturer documentation
- Working knowledge of assembly, installation, inspection, or fabrication practices relevant to hardware design and documentation
- Ability to work with engineers, technologists, technicians, customers, fabricators, and other stakeholders to define requirements and resolve design issues
- Ability to organize and complete multiple assignments with changing priorities, deadlines, and customer needs
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Candidates whose education and experience provide an equivalent combination directly related to design and drafting are encouraged to apply. Closely related experience may include electrical, electronic, controls, instrumentation, electromechanical, mechanical, manufacturing, facilities, or configuration-controlled design work.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience creating and maintaining 2D electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, electronic schematics, cable or harness drawings, and system interconnection documentation.
- Hands-on experience with PDM systems, including revision and change control, document relationships, review and approval workflows, and release of controlled drawing packages. Examples include SolidWorks PDM, Teamcenter, Windchill, or comparable PDM or Product Lifecycle Management systems.
- Experience using AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD, Siemens Xpedition/Mentor Graphics, or comparable CAD tools to produce electrical or electronic documentation
- Experience conducting field walkdowns and creating or updating as-built wiring diagrams and electrical drawings for equipment or facility systems
- Familiarity with cable and harness assembly, connector pinouts, equipment wiring, or electronics assembly, installation, and troubleshooting
- Experience supporting an accelerator, scientific facility, industrial facility, defense program, or other high-reliability technical environment
- Additional experience with mechanical drawings, SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD tools, and ASME Y14-series drafting standards, including GD&T, for associated hardware
Note to Applicants
A cover letter is recommended. Please highlight your electrical drafting experience, the types of wiring diagrams or schematics you have produced, and the CAD tools you have used. If applicable, describe your PDM experience, including revision control, drawing approvals, and release workflows. Do not include proprietary or export-controlled information.
We encourage you to apply if your experience is closely related but does not include every desired qualification. Prior PDM experience is not required; candidates should be willing to learn and use the team's PDM processes. Transferable design and drafting experience will be considered.
