Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Group Leader (Accounting Manager 4) to lead our Institutional Tax and Retirement Accounting (CNTL-ITR) group. Reporting to the Controller and Deputy Controller, the Group Leader, CNTL-ITR will be a professional with expertise and extensive experience in tax and retirement accounting, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to excellence. This position requires excellent communication and collaboration expertise to support and mentor the team while partnering with key senior internal and external stakeholders. This position will be required to develop and enhance process, control, and visibility of deliverables within the Group, and use their knowledge and experience to minimize manual effort using technological efficiencies
Key Responsibilities:
Retirement Accounting: In the role of leading the Retirement Accounting function, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of pension, 401(k), and investment accounting. This includes managing the financial reporting, analysis, and operations for two Defined Benefit Pension Plans and four 401(k) Plans with assets exceeding several billion dollars. You will collaborate closely with internal departments and external service providers to ensure compliance with financial policies, controls, and regulations. Additionally, you will lead the preparation of annual financial statements and the DOL Form 5500 processes, review investment valuations in accordance with GAAP, mitigate process risks, and serve as the primary point of contact for plan audits.
Tax: In the area of tax management, you will oversee tax compliance across various domains, including gross receipts tax, corporate income tax, payroll tax and foreign national and vendor tax. This position requires accurate reporting of Forms W-2 and IRS Form 941 for over 18,000 employees, as well as managing state income tax withholding and state unemployment filings for employees working nationwide. You will also collaborate with relevant stakeholders to compile tax data and file corporate federal Form 1065 and various state tax returns, ensuring all tax-related matters are handled with the compliance and accuracy.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Management
Demonstrated leadership in a financial organization responsible for a major functional financial area, including compliance, policy implementation, and risk management. Advanced knowledge of personnel policies and procedures, with expertise in selection, training, performance evaluation, salary administration, and career development. Broad understanding of EEO/diversity, staffing, and organizational development. Extensive experience in strategic decision-making and the ability to identify and implement process improvements.
Accounting Experience
Extensive knowledge and experience in interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) to business and accounting practices, with a strong emphasis on tax regulations, compliance requirements, and the preparation of financial statements and disclosures. Advanced experience and demonstrated success in an accounting function, with the ability to interpret and apply organizational policies and ensure compliance with government regulations, such as IRS regulations, ERISA, Department of Labor (DOL) regulations, Statement of Audit Standards (SAS), and Accounting Standards Updates. Advanced experience in researching complex issues in the areas of tax, benefits or investments, reviewing and signing off on tax returns, financial statements, DOL 5500s and an understanding self-insured benefits plan. A proven track record in identifying and establishing strong internal controls, conducting analytical reviews, and applying accounting and auditing standards is essential, as is the ability to mentor, develop, and motivate employees.
Problem Solving
Extensive experience in research and data analysis, process improvement, identifying performance gaps, and proposing solutions. Demonstrated ability to make strategic recommendations and develop procedures independently or as part of management.
Communication and Teamwork
Proven ability to communicate complex information effectively across diverse audiences. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for interaction with customers, staff, senior management, and stakeholders. Advanced organizational skills to prioritize and execute complex business and financial tasks.
Customer Service
Demonstrated capability in being proactive with excellent customer service, and extensive experience in resolving issues based on evolving business requirements. Ability to work effectively with internal teams and external service providers.
Technology
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and advanced Excel skills. Aware and adaptable of new technological advancements in this specialized area.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate coursework may be desirable. CPA highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master's degree in accounting or related field
- CPA or equivalent professional certification
- Extensive experience in retirement accounting, tax compliance, and benefits accounting
- Experience using Enterprise software in support of business operations
- Technical acumen for information technologyMaster's degree in accounting or related field.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
