The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Science Project Delivery Group (ES-SPD). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program, that includes an internal standards document referencing IBC, IEBC, and other code standard documents, at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. ES acts as an internal design agency to LANL and as a customer's representative and a building official for design produced by external design agencies. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory with a focus on non-nuclear facilities.
This position will be filled at either the Architect 1/2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Architect 1/2 is equivalent to Intern Architect under the supervision of a senior architect. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Architect 1 ($71,200-$112,900)
As an Architect 1, you will function as part of a design agency serving one of the Facilities Operations Directorates (FODs). You will be expected to work with integrated project teams (IPT) that include engineers, architects, customers, stakeholders and subject matter experts. Your teams will provide architectural and engineering design services typical for all construction project phases: scoping, design, construction, commissioning and operation. You will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- Help develop documents that define the project such as requirements documents, scoping documents, conceptual designs and alternative studies
- Produce design documents under supervision and with growing independence, including drawings, calculations, and specifications
- Support the design process by coordinating deliverables, attending meetings and helping to resolve review comments
- Take individual responsibility for meeting design schedules, managing costs, carrying out quality checks and supporting overall project delivery
- Support construction activities, including design changes, request for information, inspections and occupancy approvals
- Assist with project closeout tasks, including punch lists, as-builts, turnover and document filing
- Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as LANL Building Official (LBO), fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution
This level expects an increased ability for independent production of design deliverables whilst still under the supervision of a senior architect. In addition to what was outlined in the Architect Level 1, at this level additional responsibilities will include:
- Increased understanding of code requirements and how to apply them through code analysis
- Provide architectural design for slightly larger and more complex projects independently
- Research, evaluate and specify building products for facility modification applications
- Resolve field-initiated design questions independently, responding to field conditions and adequately communicating solutions both verbally and through design change documents

Job Requirements at Architect 1:
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work well in a team and solve problems
- Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Office)
- Basic knowledge and experience in architectural consulting, design, and construction management
- Basic understanding of architectural design processes, codes and standards
- Ability to research design issues, explore options, and recommend solutions
- Ability to follow institutional architectural policies and procedures
- Stronger knowledge and experience in architectural consulting, design, and construction management
- Experience developing architectural designs for buildings and/or building modifications
- Knowledge of building systems (electrical, mechanical, plumbing), building codes, and safety standards
- Greater experience researching design issues and developing technical solutions
Education/Experience at Architect 2: Position requires a Bachelor's degree from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) institution and 3 years of related experience. In the process of obtaining NM architect registration.
Desired Qualifications:
- Basic experience in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and REVIT tools and work processes
- Ability to obtain (or in process of obtaining) New Mexico architect registration
- Advanced degree, Licensure and/or Certifications in relevant field
- Architect 1 position: 1 year of architectural design experience (Internships will be considered)
- Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards (https://engstandards.lanl.gov/index.shtml)
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
