Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning for Production (R&D Engineer 4)

What You Will Do

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) in Pit Technologies consists of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that support plutonium programs (i.e., pit production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments) across the entire Pit Technologies (PT) Division.

The primary role of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Production is to lead application of advanced AI/ML techniques to continuously improve and drive consistency within existing processes, procedures, and operations. You will be the technical lead integrating various manufacturing, characterization, and testing processes applicable to pit surveillance and pit manufacturing in your area of expertise. This role will involve integration with other Design and Production agencies across the nuclear security enterprise as well as with subject matter experts in material science, chemistry, and nondestructive evaluation.

The successful candidate will oversee and participate in research, development, and application activities to develop AI techniques for a variety of projects related to plutonium production and surveillance activities. Responsibilities include leading R&D activities/projects related to developing AI-enabled manufacturing process control, self-driving laboratory experiments, predictive analytics for user facilities, surrogate modeling, or uncertainty quantification. These activities include, but are not limited to, creating factory level digital twins to facilitate "what if" analyses and vision systems to aid in non-destructive evaluation of product in process. Other responsibilities include steering research activities to ensure success and building teams to pursue applied R&D efforts. The candidate will be responsible for aligning AI/ML production efforts with complementary AI/ML and Digital Engineering efforts in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
