What You Will Do

The fire team in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has immediate openings for multiple post-master researchers with experience in the computational sciences or related fields including but not limited to scientific computing, computational fluid dynamics, or a relevant engineering discipline. The selected candidates will work as part of a team developing novel approaches to simulate, analyze, and communicate fire behavior and effects. Together with fellow researchers, successful candidates will lead the development and application of LANL's QUIC-Fire and HIGRAD/FIRETEC modeling softwares and auxiliaries. Los Alamos National Laboratory solves problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns, and enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Research experience in at least one of the following areas: scientific computing, computer science, data management, software engineering, user-interface design, fire, hydrology, combustion, computational fluid dynamics, or computational engineering.

• Experience with compiled (fortran, C, etc.) and/or interpreted languages (python, Julia, etc.)

• Experience with working on a variety of computational platforms (local systems, log-in systems, cloud computing, etc.) and systems (Mac, Windows, or Linux)

• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing

• Familiarity with best software development practices, including source code control in a team environment and git usage

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Education/Experience: A Master's degree in the natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, computational science, or related STEM discipline. Conferred within the past three (3) years, or all degree requirements completed by commencement of the appointment and not yet accepted into another master's program or PhD program.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with both compiled (fortran, C, etc.) and interpreted languages (python, R, etc.)

• Experience working in an interdisciplinary team

• Experience with development of graphical user interfaces

• Experience with the programming, parallelization, and optimizing of numerical software

Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
