E-13 requires a dedicated computer science support staff member interested in working closely with engineering analysts. In this role you will work to develop and maintain more complete software packaging and distribution practices for in-house software projects, comparable to the open-source community. In this role you will enable the weapons engineering simulation community to provide agile, responsive, and efficient simulation results with sufficiently predictive quantified uncertainty useful for engineering decisions for weapon design and system behavior.
Scientist 1: $94,500 - $154,600
Your responsibilities will include maintaining developer operations, software deployment, and incorporating best practices for deployment, documentation, and testing. In addition, you will help with the management of the E-13 compute environment, work with R&D engineers within the group to identify areas for deployment opportunities and participate in brainstorming sessions to determine optimal use of computational systems.
Scientist 2: $104,100 - $172,200
In addition to the tasks outlined above, at this level you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining HPC DevOps workflows, including CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation. You will also be tasked with proposing innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems, expanding on existing efforts or establishing novel research directions.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Assist in maintaining a Conda channel where software projects can be deployed against multiple sets of upstream dependencies for automated environment dependency resolution
- Experience with Python, C++, Bash, etc. in addition to basic knowledge of software development, and best practices for documentation, testing, and deployment
- Familiarity with Linux systems and tools
- Experience with software configuration management and version control
- Familiarity with DevOps tools and principles (CI/CD, automation)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in documentation and presentations; experience meeting deliverable deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Serve as an experienced DevOps and HPC infrastructure scientist supporting the deployment, integration, and monitoring of scientific applications
- Act as group liaison with other LANL computing organizations
- Serve as a skilled scientist on scientific programming techniques, large-scale data analysis methods, and Software Quality Assurance practices
- Inform and aid in driving the implementation of organizational, project, and program computational solutions and analysis workflow best practices
- Ability to creatively solve a diverse range of complex problems
- Lead technical decision-making within a project; make decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives
- Develop and implement project management plans, including scope, deliverable, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects
Education at the Scientist 1 level:. Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education at the Scientist 2 level: Positions requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Developer Operations (DevOps), including the deployment of custom software solutions, continuous integration and deployment, and maintenance of deployed software
- Perform C++ compiler and library management
- Perform Python package management
- Familiarity with build and package managers (Conda, SCons, CMake)
- Experience or training in system administration for Linux servers; managing software projects.
- Active DOE Q or DOD Top Secret security clearance within the last five years
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
