The Manufacturing Systems & Infrastructure Support Team is seeking an experienced Computing Systems Professional 3 (CSP-3) to provide advanced Windows systems administration, Microsoft SQL Server database administration, infrastructure engineering, and technical leadership. In this role, you will design, implement, secure, and maintain enterprise server and database environments supporting scientific, engineering, manufacturing, and commercial applications in both unclassified and classified environments.

The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical contributor, responsible for the reliability, performance, security, and lifecycle management of enterprise systems and databases, while partnering with developers, database administrators, cybersecurity personnel, network engineers, and customers to deliver effective infrastructure solutions.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Design, implement, administer, and support Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server environments supporting mission-critical applications and services.
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances and databases, including database migrations and application integrations.
  • Manage database backups, validate recovery procedures, and implement high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance through query analysis, index maintenance, resource management, and troubleshooting.
  • Administer database access, permissions, and security controls to protect data and meet institutional requirements.
  • Ensure infrastructure and database reliability, availability, security, and compliance through proactive monitoring, patching, vulnerability remediation, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
  • Lead and support infrastructure projects by gathering requirements, evaluating solutions, assessing risks, and implementing secure, scalable technologies.
  • Develop and maintain automation, scripting, and configuration management solutions to improve operational efficiency, consistency, and system reliability.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies to address evolving customer, business, and mission needs.
  • Collaborate with customers, software developers, cybersecurity personnel, database administrators, vendors, and other technical teams to deliver infrastructure solutions and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, system inventories, and architecture documentation while providing technical guidance to team members.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide after-hours support for mission-critical Windows Server environments, ensuring timely response and resolution of operational issues and service disruptions.

Salary Range: While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements: Applicants must submit a comprehensive resume reflective of relevant experience that addresses the minimum job requirements and desired qualifications of the position below for full consideration.
  • Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Additional Skills and Knowledge:
    • Demonstrated experience testing, troubleshooting, patching, and remediating vulnerabilities, as well as resolving operating system, database, and application issues within enterprise computing environments.
    • Working knowledge of Windows Server 2022, virtualized environments, Microsoft IIS, Active Directory, and PowerShell scripting for system administration tasks.
    • Experience applying PowerShell to a Windows Server enterprise environment (e.g., filename regex matching, automated folder cleanup, permissions auditing, server health checks, resource monitoring, or event log filtering).
    • Experience managing database users, roles, permissions, and authentication in accordance with security requirements.
    • Skilled in using VMware for server and resource management.
    • Experience with configuration management and automation, preferably Ansible or PowerShell, for Windows servers and database operations.
    • Experience implementing authentication methods, configuring web and server certificates, and enabling Single Sign-On (SSO) for applications and systems.
    • Experience applying computer security principles and networking protocols within computing environments.
    • Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and deploying Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software in enterprise environments.

Qualifications We Desire:
  • At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
  • Advanced Microsoft SQL Server administration experience in large-scale enterprise environments, including database upgrades, migrations, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
  • Experience implementing and supporting SQL Server high availability and disaster recovery technologies, (e.g., Always On availability groups, failover cluster instances, or log shipping).
  • Advanced Microsoft Windows Server administration experience, including Active Directory, Group Policy, IIS, and PowerShell.
  • Experience supporting PostgreSQL, Redis, TimescaleDB, or other enterprise database platforms.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud computing platforms.
  • Experience supporting AI/ML, GPU, high-performance computing (HPC), or scientific computing environments.
  • Experience implementing Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), NIST cybersecurity controls, or similar compliance frameworks for Windows and database environments.
  • Experience developing Ansible playbooks and roles to automate provisioning, configuration, patching, and compliance across Windows and Linux environments.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Splunk, or similar tools.
  • Advanced vendor or professional certifications in Microsoft, database administration, VMware, AWS, Security+, or related technologies.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration experience in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • An active DOE Q-level clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. This is not a Telework or Remote position. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Work Schedule: This position may/will require 24/7 coverage, which could/will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
