Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3)

What You Will Do

The Inorganic, Isotope, and Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) is seeking a Deputy Group Leader that will partner with the Group leader and group office staff to provide strong scientific and operational leadership for the C-IIAC's technical and programmatic activities. This will include developing, managing and championing capabilities and personnel; promoting successful program execution; and ensuring compliance in the areas of safety, security, environmental management, financial accountability, staffing and human resource issues, and facilities and operations. The successful candidate will also function as a key part of the Division management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and missions of the Chemistry Division, including planning strategic directions and sound management practices. Through it all, the DGL will be responsible for fostering a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. As this is a 0.5 FTE management position, the DGL will be expected to conduct funded (0.5 FTE) research or programmatic activities of his or her own that are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.

The Inorganic, Isotope, and Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) is comprised of more than 70 full time scientists, technical staff, professional staff, postdocs, and students with diverse experience and skills in the fields of chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, and geology. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Strong record of technical excellence and achievement in chemical or related research, as demonstrated through publications, reports, presentations or other products of independent research.
  • Proven experience in technical leadership, including technical decision-making and goal setting, budget and resource management, and personnel development and mentorship.
  • Demonstrated record of identifying and responding to new funding opportunities, program development, and assembling of strong teams and collaborations across organizational boundaries.
  • Strong record of effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications/reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as evidenced by building and mentoring effective teams and successfully interacting with all levels of scientists, engineers, and other technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Experience communicating, implementing and/or administering safety, security and environmental policies in a technical setting.
  • Experience operating in research facilities with chemical and/or radiological hazards.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, promoting teamwork and collaborative science.
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in science from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Record of technical achievement relevant to the group's activities, in one or more of the following areas: inorganic, organometallic or organic synthetic chemistry and related characterization methodologies; radioisotope production and handling; chemical separations; radiochemistry; actinide chemistry; and nuclear materials chemistry.
  • Record of operational management or oversight of experimental activities in at least one of the group's technical areas, in addition to demonstrated ability to develop operational oversight abilities in the other technical areas.
  • Successful experience interacting with external funding agencies (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, IC, etc.).
  • Knowledge of DOE and other sponsor needs in actinide research, isotope production and applications, energy programs, weapons or national security efforts relevant to the group's capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of LANL policies in integrated work management, safety, security, environment, finance, and human resources.
  • Prior experience working within a radiological or nuclear facility.
  • Prior experience contributing to the strategic directions and program development of an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with conflict resolution and performance issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in quality management and quality assurance.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering
  • Active Q clearance, or the ability to gain a Q clearance.

Work Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico and is an onsite position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
