What You Will Do

The Pit Technologies (PT) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the operational group at the forefront of plutonium pit manufacturing and surveillance, enabling the modernization and continued stewardship of the United States' thermonuclear weapons stockpile. This position is assigned to the Tooling Design Team within the Engineering and Product Support Group (PT-5) of PT Division. The team provides design and configuration management services for the tooling that enables all aspects of the division's diverse mission set, which includes manufacturing 30 plutonium pits per year by 2028, surveilling pits in the stockpile stewardship program, and other national security missions.

Designer/Drafter 3 $63,200 - $99,000

As a Designer/Drafter assigned to the Engineering and Product Support Group you will support the development of tooling and equipment for all Pit Technologies groups and operations and will be responsible for contributing to all the following activities: tooling design and prototyping (CAD modeling and drafting), reverse engineering, and process development. You will work closely with other Pit Technologies product engineering, design, and fabrication personnel in a dynamic and collaborative work environment to supply your customers with timely and novel tooling designs that are fit for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. You will be expected to work independently and be self-directed in determining technical objectives of assignments, which you may complete without established procedures. Yet you will also work as a part of a high-performing team, while contributing to continuous process improvement initiatives to better meet customer requirements.

Designer/Drafter 4 $69,500 - $110,300

As a designer/drafter 4, you will be expected to perform all the functions of the lower level but with a greater proficiency.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computer-aided Design
  • Proficiently skilled in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.
  • Intermediate level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.
  • Intermediate understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS, and related industry standards for addressing fit, form, and function.

  • Intermediate understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical, or electrical disciplines.
  • Intermediate knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
  • Intermediate understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment.
  • Intermediate understanding of machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder, and inspection equipment.
  • Intermediate understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.

  • Experience working in diverse teams, collaborating on novel designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technicians.

  • Advanced level knowledge and proficiency in the above skills and knowledge areas.

Education and Experience (Designer/Drafter 3)

Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education and Experience (Designer/Drafter 4)

Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
  • ASME GDTP Technologist Certification (ASME Y14.5-2009)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge associated with production processes related to manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience with mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods.
  • Active DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level).
