What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Division (ES-DO) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Engineering Services - Weapons Project Delivery (ES-WPD) is seeking a skilled and experienced Designer/Drafter to join our team in support of implementing projects within facilities at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Designer/Drafter 5 ($85,900 - $139,900)

As a Designer/Drafter 5, you will be working as part of a design team assessing, providing design and drafting support aimed at maintaining and upgrading facility systems at LANL.Regular functions include but are not limited to: creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs, producing calculations and design recommendations; developing initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval; functioning for and contributing to a strong team-work environment; mentoring junior-level drafters. In addition, you'll continue to expand your knowledge and experience by:
  • Advancing knowledge in understanding engineering design
  • Leading other Designers and Drafters
  • Training and mentoring junior designers
  • Providing organizational improvements and leadership
  • Advancing skills in the utilization of drafter tools


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Skills
  • Expert proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
  • Expert level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent. Demonstrates consistent excellence in application of standards, dimensioning schemes, materials, codes and production methods.
  • Expert knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms
  • Expert knowledge of schematics, and facility equipment
  • Expert knowledge of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture
Discipline-Specific Knowledge
  • Expert knowledge of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electrical or structural disciplines
  • Expert knowledge of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function. Subject matter expert of industry, regulatory policies pertinent to one or more engineering disciplines.
Teamwork and Communication
  • Recognized as lead on team and subject matter expert on collaboration of designs, from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technician
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 7 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
