Detonation Physics Postdoctoral Research Associate

What You Will Do

The position involves examination of detonation wave propagation across a range of conventional, insensitive, and non-ideal high explosive materials, and includes the study of the science of shock and reaction zone interactions, detonation-confiner interactions, and obtaining data for reactive burn model calibration. The appointed candidate will have access to a large walk-in firing vessel with advanced diagnostic capabilities for high-speed flow characterization, including laser-based diagnostics such as photonic doppler velocimetry, streak and framing cameras, and shadowgraph and Schlieren capabilities. The candidate will be given the opportunity to field experiments using high energy protons as a probe in flash radiography at the Proton Radiography facility at Los Alamos.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Background in experimental science of fluid flows.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field, in the area of fluid dynamics, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in high-speed flow experimentation.
  • Experience in combustion or reacting flows.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy (DoE) Q Clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Q Clearance: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
