Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG) is seeking a skilled welder/fabricator to join our team of machinists, inspectors, programmers, welders, and metal fabricators. The successful candidate will work in a team environment to provide design, engineering support, and fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory related to nuclear weapons programs. Our shop specializes in one-off precision prototype products to include welding, fabrication, and machining of common and exotic materials. Projects range in scope from small bench top to large scale assemblies and weldments.
This position will be filled at either the Development and Fabrication Technician level 3 or 4, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Development and Fabrication Tec 3: $63,200 - $99,000
Reporting to the Welding/Fabrication Shop Supervisor, your job duties will include welding, fabrication and machine tool operation. You must have the ability to interpret mechanical fabrication and assembly drawings, as well as the ability to organize and prepare the required materials/supplies/parts that will be processed using various tools, machinery, and equipment. You must have the ability to identify proper welding process for various parts, assemblies, and configurations to include GTAW and GMAW, and basic knowledge of metal fabrication techniques to include roll forming, press brake operation, and laser/plasma cutting.
Development and Fabrication Tec 4: $69,500 - $110,300
In addition to level 3 requirements, at level 4 you must have the ability to perform precision welding in standard and exotic metals utilizing processes to include GTAW, GMAW, and torch brazing. You must also have advanced knowledge interpreting mechanical fabrication and assembly drawings as well as the ability to operate manual mills and lathes, CNC press brakes, and laser/plasma cutting machines. You must have the ability to interface with customers to provide design input for assemblies and weldments and knowledge of computer aided design software. You will be required to complete tasks with little or no direction and to develop new fabrication techniques, principles, and concepts to improve the manufacturability of complex parts and assemblies.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Fabrication and Welding Technology
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of welding and fabrication in a prototype shop environment.
- Ability to quicky gain multiple LANL welding certifications in materials such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminum utilizing welding processes such as GTAW and GMAW.
- Ability to follow policies and procedures for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Drawings & Specifications
- Ability to interpret drawings and specifications to ensure fabricated components meet design requirements.
- Ability to create manufacturing drawings or sketches of fabricated components.
Customer Service
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers to extract design intent.
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service through teaming with peers and customers to negotiate work requirements.
Additional Job Requirements for Development and Fabrication Tec 4
- Demonstrated experience in welding exotic metals such as titanium, Inconel, and aluminum.
- Demonstrated experience in welding dissimilar metals, including copper, brass, and stainless steel.
Education/Experience Level 3:
Position requires an associate's degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Level 4:
Position requires an associate's degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Welding tech school graduate or having completed a formal apprenticeship program
- Machine shop experience with manual mills and lathes
- Experience with hazardous materials that are toxic, pyrophoric or have other hazardous characteristics.
- CWI or weld inspection experience
- Current LANL welding certifications
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
