What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Emergency Management/Response Specialist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

We are searching for people to join a dynamic and diverse team where you will bring your skills and expertise to strengthen our capabilities. You will work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to respond to and mitigate hazardous materials emergencies involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials.

The Emergency Response (EM-RESP) Group's primary mission is to support Laboratory operations through solving hazardous materials issues at Laboratory owned or leased nuclear and non-nuclear facilities. When not performing emergency response operations, you will be participating in preparedness and training activities supporting not only LANL, but local, State, and Federal response partners.

EM-RESP personnel may be called upon to support or serve on national emergency response programs responsible for responding to nuclear/radiological incidents, national and global security activities, and domestic civilian radiological assistance. Additional services we provide to the Laboratory and surrounding communities include providing hazardous materials training, technical assistance and consultations, and community outreach and education activities.

The successful candidate must be highly self-motivated, have a demonstrated track record of personal initiative, be results and performance-oriented, and have a proven track record of effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Job Requirements for Emergency Management/Response Specialist 2:

  • Proven track record of initiative and being able to accomplish tasks with little supervision.
  • Fundamental knowledge of the principles of radiation and radiation detection.
  • Experience in the use, maintenance, and upkeep of emergency response equipment and PPE.
  • Proven record of effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to differentiate among audiences with diverse radiological backgrounds, as evidenced by seminars, briefings, and course instruction.
  • Experience, and a comfort level, working under challenging and occasionally austere conditions (e.g. high heat, humidity, cold, strenuous activity).


Emergency Mgmt/Resp Specialist 3 $106,400 - $176,000

Additional Job Requirements for Emergency Management/Response Specialist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated experience in functional leadership and mentorship, with the ability to organize and coordinate collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in analyzing radiological hazards and prescribing and implementing controls in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting and problem solving complex radiological instrumentation.
Education/Experience: Emergency Management/Response Specialist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Education/Experience: Emergency Management/Response Specialist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience wearing anti-contamination clothing, turnout gear and HAZMAT Level "A" & "B" suits with SCBA.
  • Formal training in ICS, NIMS, hazardous materials and/or radiation protection is highly desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of health physics and/or high hazard radiological work.
  • Advanced level knowledge and experience responding to radiological emergencies.
  • Working/expert knowledge of radiological instrumentation and their applications.

  • The candidate must be willing to work on-call as required. Time requirement for on-site response while on call is 60 minutes.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
