Accelerator Operations and Technology - Mechanical Design Engineering (AOT-MDE) is primarily focused on maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Accelerator. MDE provides engineering and design support to Mechanical Engineering projects both within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and external customers. A team of designers in MDE support this range of activities as well as directly supporting other groups in AOT division and across LANL. MDE is currently seeking a highly qualified designer to join the team.
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Provide senior level mechanical design support for the design, fabrication, and procurement of components needed for the operation and maintenance of systems associated with the LANSCE accelerator complex.
- Design of a wide variety of accelerator equipment and systems; including vacuum chambers, magnets, electro-mechanical diagnostic devices, support and alignment structures, and associated equipment for the acceleration and transport of particle beams.
- Work in fabrication shops or in accelerator radiation areas to successfully perform some aspects of the job.
- Provide archiving and data management support for accelerator operations and new projects.
- Provide coordination and liaison between LANL engineers and contract fabrication shops to produce finished machined parts.
- Lead all aspects of the design and drafting process, from making sketches and layouts to generation of three-dimensional models and production of mechanical drawings suitable for use in fabrication efforts to include the checking of other designers drawings. Extensive knowledge of GD&T to support drawing checking. Many components must operate remotely in vacuum and are subject to harsh radiation environments.
- Provide advice to engineers and mentoring to junior designers regarding design issues, dimensioning strategies, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing practices.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated advanced mechanical design and drafting experience illustrating the ability to provide creative and practical solutions to a variety of design problems.
- Demonstrated advanced experience with three-dimensional Computer Aided Design programs such as SolidWorks or CREO.
- Demonstrated advanced use of drafting practices in accordance with ASME Y14.5, and the proven ability to incorporate Geometric Design and Tolerancing (GD&T) concepts into working designs.
- Demonstrated ability to take a set of design requirements from a customer and develop those requirements through the entire design process from conceptual design to finished drawings, and to follow that design all the way through to a fabricated part.
- Demonstrated professional drafting and design experience in one or more of the group's areas of responsibility, which includes vacuum design, accelerator structure design, RF-drive systems, water-cooling systems, beam line layout, Beam Target design, and accelerator diagnostic device design.
- Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with scientists, engineers, machinists, and fabrication personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior design personnel in the ability to perform mechanical design.
- Demonstrated ability to check, correct, and provide constructive feed-back to other designers regarding their designs.
- Demonstrated experience with CNC manufacturing and inspection techniques and procedures.
Education Requirements Engineering Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Expert knowledge of SolidWorks CAD and SolidWorks PDM Professional. Experience installing CAD and PDM software on individual workstations. Familiar with configuring individual workstations when setting up PDM user accounts. Able to modify PDM workflows, transition actions, PDM tasks, and data card integrations. Must be knowledgeable with configuring individual workstations to ensure compatibility with the PDM professional system.
- Proficient with NX CAD installations and license server operation. Must be able to search for legacy NX CAD data and convert that data into a SolidWorks format. Fluent with NX CAD licensing issues and able to use the flexlm license manager when installing new license files.
- Knowledgeable dealing with server and workstation vulnerabilities. Familiar with interacting with the vulnerability remediation team when resolving vulnerabilities.
- Knowledgeable with specific hardware requirements such as CPUs and GPUs when selecting hardware for the design/engineering team.
- Able to assist CAD and PDM users when resolving technical issues and interact closely with LANL IT personnel and CAD vendors when resolving issues.
- Ensure all maintenance contracts for SolidWorks CAD, PDM Pro, NX CAD, and ANSYS simulation software are kept current.

Work Environment
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
