What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or Engineering Technologist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

V-14 (Test Engineering) supports the national security and nuclear deterrent mission by providing high-quality, empirical evidence through the execution and assessment of weapons system and component testing.

The successful candidate will support the experimental evaluation of weapons components, subsystems, and systems. The Engineering Technologist is responsible for supporting the preparation and execution of experimental activities, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment, setting up instrumentation and data acquisition equipment, and other similar tasks. Specific test environments include but are not limited to shock, vibration, thermal conditioning, blast, and mechanical load-deflection testing.

Instilling and supporting a safety and security-conscious environment are paramount in all assignments and actions. Compliance with LANL and facility safety and security practices, and delivering accurate test results in a team effort are central to all testing efforts. Additional job responsibilities include participating in the development of new testing technologies and techniques and implementing quality assurance requirements.

Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include high explosives, radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, and other hazardous materials.

Engineering Technologist 2 (ET-2) $96,600 - $158,000

Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:
  • Provide support in the areas of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing.
  • Help determine proper processes for product development, including fabrication, material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.
  • Proficient in computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems and use of CAD systems, including CREO, for drawing preparation.
  • Develop solutions to engineering problems in support of hardware design and/or testing. Conducts calculations and performs analyses in support of engineering activities.
  • Demonstrate and promote team building and collaboration as well as conflict resolution.
  • Interact with all levels of personnel and customers, with demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

Engineering Technologist 3 (ET-3) $106,400 - $176,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful applicant will:
  • Lead small projects, in conjunction with the Team Lead, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution.
  • Provide instrumentation inventory and procurement support.
  • Plan and schedule detailed phases of engineering work and tests.
  • Develop resolution to complex problems and apply expert engineering knowledge to them.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and executing experiments or tests of varying complexity and scale, preferably in shock, vibration, and/or thermal environments.
  • Knowledge in the use of data acquisition systems and associated diagnostics.
  • Knowledge in the use of standard engineering software for experimental data acquisition and analysis such as Mathcad, MATLAB, LabView or other similar software.
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of testing equipment and systems.
  • Experience working and delivering product on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on small projects.
  • Advanced knowledge in the use of specialized hardware and software for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors and other internal groups.
  • Excellent organizational skills for project and schedule tracking.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Q Clearance
  • Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile
  • Experience reading and working with drawings
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of CREO and GD&T.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
