The CFO Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) Program is a year-round opportunity to gain hands-on financial experience while earning your graduate degree. You'll receive competitive pay, mentorship, and the chance to contribute to LANL's national security mission.
As part of the CFO Pipeline Program, you'll work with mentors and subject matter experts, attend onsite sessions (typically one day per week), and learn financial systems, accounting processes, and laboratory operations. After completing the program, you'll be placed within the CFO organization.
Participants also enroll in the CFO MBA Program through New Mexico State University-a fully online, 24-month program designed for working professionals. Tuition and fees are covered, and successful completion program and MBA may lead to full-time employment at LANL.
The CFO delivers financial products and services in support of the Laboratory's mission. Our CFO management focus includes the following:
- Contributing to finance/accounting and administrative operations
- Developing, maintaining, and analyzing financial data using Microsoft Excel
- Leveraging various software applications to conduct research and perform data analysis
- Integrating processes and systems across the CFO organization
- Supporting the implementation of effective business processes and systems
- Partnering with the programs and technical divisions to strengthen our business capabilities
- Building alliances within the Controller and Finance Divisions as well as internal and external technical customers
- Providing stewardship of Laboratory and government resources
- Upholding a safe and secure working environment
- Working as a team member with direction from your mentor
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a business-related field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Documented acceptance into the NMSU graduate program
- Enroll and successfully complete a minimum of 6 graduate credit hours per semester
- All students MUST remain enrolled at NMSU while working at the Lab during the academic year
- Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on 4.0 scale during the MBA program
- If regular, full-time employment is offered, there is a two-year work commitment after completion of the MBA program. If the employee is unable to meet the additional two-year requirement, the full amount of tuition and book costs must be reimbursed to the Laboratory
- Proficiency using basic computer tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook for business communications
- Candidates will be required to demonstrate basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintain a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance which typically requires US citizenship
- Reliable internet is required for teleworking
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience and/or education in a business field
- Experience analyzing and editing databases
- Experience learning from online tutorials (LinkedIn, YouTube, Khan Academy)
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
- Experience in providing customer service
- Experience with public speaking and presenting
Features of the CFO Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program:
- Tuition and fees are fully covered
- Candidates must cover required pre-requisite courses
- 36 credit hours over the course of 6 semesters

Education Required:
Completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related business discipline within the last 3 years and acceptance into the NMSU Online MBA Program.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for a telework arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
