What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Health and Safety Tec 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Health and Safety Tech 4 ($63,200 - $99,000)
The Occupational Safety and Health - Industrial Safety and Hygiene (OSH-ISH) group has a Health and Safety (H&S) Tech 4/5 position available. This position will report to the Safety Services Team Lead. The position will be to support a variety of programs including the Safety Concerns and Pause Stop Work Programs. The OSH-ISH group is a key component of the OSH Division, within the ESHQ Associate Level Directorate (ALD).

The H&S Tec 4 will be responsible for supporting a variety of programs as needed within the OSH-ISH group. These programs may include LOTO, Electrical Safety, Exposure Assessment, Hearing and Noise, Ventillation, Pause Stop Work, Vehicle Pedestrian and Safety. The selected candidates will be assigned to one or more programs based OSH-ISH group needs. Candidates only need to have knowledge and skills in at least one of the program areas. Each candidate is required to promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory.

Health and Safety Tech 5 ($76,900 - 122,200)
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, the Health and Safety Technician 5 is considered to be an advanced level. Incumbent has demonstrated knowledge and skills in their technical specialty. Uses ability as a skilled specialist to contribute to the development of techniques and completes work in innovative and effective ways. Applies advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Assignments may be wide in scope requiring a broad background of experience and capability in all areas, but limited technical depth.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proficient in interfacing with database management systems.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with occupational safety and health hazards and the application of controls.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to occupational safety and health.
  • In-depth knowledge and skills in occupational safety and health.
Additional Job Requirements for Health and Safety Tec 5:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at this level requires:
  • Advanced-level knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA life safety code, and code of federal regulations 1910 CFR General Industry and 1926 Construction (or specialized/technical knowledge) and other relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, operating configuration, and lockout/tag-out policies and procedures.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of and ability to apply IHS policies and procedures, including the IHS quality plan and Laboratory industrial hygiene and safety manual.
  • Advanced-level skills in observing worksite procedures and physical layouts, and in interviewing employees to gather information on operations, material used, and equipment that may result in illness, impairment, injury, or impact to the health of workers and members of the community.
  • Advanced-level ability and skills in the area of reviewing work plans, blueprints, specifications, and other documents to ensure the application of health standards for illness and injury prevention in the construction and modification of facilities.
  • Advanced-level skill in the preparation and presentation of complex, high-level industrial hygiene/safety reports.

Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires a High School Diploma and 4-6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate's degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a High School Diploma and 6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate's degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the laboratory layout, ALD's, Divisions, and contacts.
  • Capacity to comprehend DOE and LANL occupational safety and health requirements, as they pertain to programs.
  • Experience in management, coordination and organization of multiple aspects of employee safety concerns.
  • Strong communication skills.

Work Environment:




Work Schedule: Preferred is 9/80; 9 hours M-TH, 8 hours F with every other F off. Ability to work off shift or swing shift may be required.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and required to be on site at the discretion of management. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
