What You Will Do


This position will be filled at either the Health Physicist 1/Health Physicist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


Be part of something extraordinary! The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ALDESHQ) has a need for a Health Physicist, supporting the External Dosimetry program. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) External Dosimetry program provides comprehensive external dosimetry services to over 10,000 radiation workers in support of the Laboratory's nuclear security, environmental monitoring, and research missions. As an External Dosimetry Health Physicist, you will assist in ensure accurate, timely, technically sound, results in accordance with quality, technical, and regulatory requirements. This includes performing and reviewing dosimetry results, developing methods and procedures for external dosimetry operations, conducting studies, preparing reports on relevant technical issues, and providing advanced technical guidance. The dosimetry program is accredited by the U.S Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) for External Dosimetry.

Health Physicist 2, $104,100 - $172,200

You will work with the External Dosimetry program to provide quality, defensible, dosimetry services to the Laboratory. Your responsibilities will include review of dosimetry results, investigating and resolving anomalous results, conducting studies and preparing reports on technical issues, developing procedures and technical basis documents, and taking an active role in development and implementation of program improvements.

Health Physicist 3, $114,700 - $191,200
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be responsible for providing technical leadership to the program and assisting with professional development of the External Dosimetry program; taking the lead in developing and implementing improvement initiatives; and managing resources and scheduling; collaborating with RP personnel and customers to resolve technical issues.

Minimum Job Requirements Health Physicist Level 2:

  • Demonstrated experience with implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835 dosimetry requirements;
  • Working knowledge of health physics as it relates to external dosimetry;
  • Demonstrated experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection;
  • Skills in conceptualizing and communicating dosimetry concepts to technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Oral and written communication skills; and
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist Level 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the HP leve 3 requires:

  • Advanced experience with implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835 dosimetry requirements;
  • Advanced knowledge of health physics as it relates to external dosimetry;
  • Advanced experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection;
  • Advanced skills in conceptualizing and communicating dosimetry concepts to techncial and non-technical personnel, and
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills.

Training/Certifications: Relevant professional certifications preferred (e.g., ABHP, NRRPT, and/or other relevant certifications)

Health Physicist Level 2 Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Health Physicist Level 3 Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE O.426.2A: Requires a Bachelor's Degree and 1 year of Nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Experience administering the requirements of the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP), or equivalent accreditation processes, as applied to external dosimetry programs;
  • Experience with data management systems, SQL, Oracle server databases and creating SQL Queries; and
  • American Board of Health Physics Certification (CHP).

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate high-pitched sounds, sitting for prolonged periods, standing, occasionally lifting up to 20-30 pounds.

Work Environment: Primarily in an office environment performing desk work.

Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
