This position will be filled at either the Health Physicist level 3/4This, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Health Physicist 3: $114,700-$191,200
The Radiation Protection Division has a need for an operational Health Physicist (HP) supporting LANL programs and projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) deployed Health Physics group RP-TA55. Reporting to the RP-TA55 Radiation Protection Manager, the operational HP is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Radiation Protection (RP) program while supporting work execution. Executing all manners of operational health physics/radiation safety, the HP will be able to perform all matters of operational health physics/radiation safety independently and have the skills set and abilities to act as the lead person or technical adviser on small to medium projects related to radiation protection. Responsibilities will include: investigating radiation hazards in the full range of RP assignments; developing and implementing metrics to measure the effectiveness of the RP Program; developing, implementing and evaluating administrative and engineering controls to protect Laboratory personnel from radiological hazards; developing and implementing monitoring programs to measure the buildup of radioactive materials in the workplace; measuring the integrity of radiological engineering controls; and help ensure that RP concepts and policies are incorporated into Laboratory designs to protect workers, the public and the environment.

Health Physicist 4: $125,200-$211,300
In addition to experience needed for Health Physicist 3, candidate will provide expert technical and professional guidance to radiation protection division, directorate and Laboratory management. Expert-level professional with institutional impact. Having broad expertise or unique knowledge, uses skills to contribute to the development of objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways. Develops advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories. Viewed as an expert in the field within the Laboratory. Works on unusually significant, unique or complex issues, provides solutions that are highly creative and where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Creates formal networks involving coordination among groups, and other key decision makers. Regularly contacts other resources, internal and external, to the organization/Laboratory. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long- range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated. Virtually self-supervisory. Uses independent judgment for determining course of action to accomplish objectives. Use wide latitude in the methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. #shiftwork

Minimum Job Requirements:
Health Physicist 3

- Advanced knowledge of operational Health Physics including contamination control, external exposure control, airborne radioactivity monitoring.
- Advanced experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835, 49 CFR and part 20 requirements
- Ability to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
- Ability to prepare and present radiological safety/protection reports
- Experience responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.
- Provides advanced technical support, technical assistance and guidance on large-scope and/or complex radiological control problems, recommending and assuring implementation of corrective actions (including changes in the work environment) when necessary. Examples include reviewing and approving proposed work and design documents for large-scale projects, planning technically complex radiological work and specifying work controls, performing complex personnel and facility radiation exposure measurements, performing advanced dose or shielding calculations, or performing advanced special dose evaluations.
- Research, develops and implements advanced technical basis documents, policies, and procedures in such technical areas as (but not limited to): inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergency procedures
- Acts as lead or technical advisor on large complex projects related to radiation protection. Such projects may have significance for the radiation protection program and/or Laboratory operability and goals.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification and the higher level requires:

Education/Experience Requirements:
Health Physicist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Professional certification is desired.
Health Physicist 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science, and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected. Professional certification may be expected.
DOE O.426.2A: Requires a Bachelor's Degree, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of Nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced knowledge of Los Alamos National Laboratory's radiation protection policies, practices, and procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of actinide processing health physics.
- Advanced knowledge of air monitoring and contamination control, including containment tents and glove bags.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Professional certification is desired (e.g. NRRPT or CHP)
- Active Q clearance
Work Schedule: This position is for SHIFT work. This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, October 31st. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
