Hydrotest Fielding Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2)
- Req. Number: IRC140799
- Organization : J-2/Dynamic Structure Design & Engineering
- City, State: Los Alamos, New Mexico
- Recruiter Name: Brown, Christopher Shawne
- Recruiter Email: csbrown@lanl.gov
The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking to fill multiple fielding engineer positions to support our vessel operations for our Hydrotest and SCE programs. This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The selected candidates will be responsible for the design and implementation of confinement vessel configurations used to support hydrodynamic (hydro) tests in support of the stockpile stewardship program. This involves design of the vessel interfaces between the hydrodynamic test device and the confinement vessel, leading the vessel operations team during the experiment runup phase, and working in collaboration with the Firing Site leaders and Diagnostic Engineers when fielding and executing hydro tests. These interactions entail: design of vessel shielding to ensure longevity of the 6' vessel, collaborating with assembly and system engineers to ensure requirements are being addressed, designing and engineering device-specific hardware and diagnostics, working with machine shops to fabricate parts, and fielding vessel hardware in support of the experiment to ensure data is collected according to specified, customer requirements. The selected candidate will need to possess strong teaming skills to collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, drafters/designers, and craft personnel. Travel may be required to Nevada National Security Site in Nevada.
Note: All applicants are required to submit a resume and cover letter addressing the minimum requirements of this job ad.
R&D Engineer 1 ($94,500-$154,600)
As a Mechanical Field Engineer at the R&D Engineer level 1, the selected candidate will work with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. He or she will assist with the design and development of confinement vessel configurations to support execution of dynamic high explosive-related experiments for the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL's) Weapons Program as well as other national security customers. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with design and operational team members within J-2 and other groups at LANL, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS) Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Job duties will include assisting with development of test plans, documenting test reports, developing/documenting as-needed designs in compliance with requirements, representing confinement vessel needs to project, as well as initiating and evaluating fabrications and assemblies and supporting the execution team at the various firing sites located at LANL, LLNL, and at MSTS NNSS.
R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100-$172,200)
As an R&D Engineer 2, the selected candidate will be expected to perform all the duties of an R&D Engineer 1. In addition, the selected candidate will independently develop solutions to complex problems, oversee and communicate expertise to customers on vessel configuration projects, develop and implement technical approaches to meet testing requirements, and lead the execution of testing vessel configurations at various firing sites.
