Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/ R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation's Detonator Production facility that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the detonator production. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop, and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly provide detonation related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700-$168,200)

As an R&D Engineer 2, you will be expected to have demonstrated knowledge of and experience in an engineering discipline. With demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects, you will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect and analyze data, perform cost-benefit-risk analysis, recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses, define post-implementation monitoring and benefits, and help implement the changes. You will champion change and make presentations to upper management at various points of the change study. You will be expected to get familiar with IE models and to conduct simulations with them under the supervision of more experienced staff. Ability to work in a team environment is a must as you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. Prior knowledge/certification in lean manufacturing principles, statistical quality control techniques, and Six Sigma methodologies are highly desirable.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300-$206,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as an R&D Engineer 3, applies an interprets, on a broad basis, specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis of situations or date requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives. Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards. Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts. Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers. Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives. Contributes to developments in industry and develops new skills consistent with state-of-the-art. May attain additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognition to grow in field.

Communication Skills: Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels. Having strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work and influence cross- functionally.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Project Management: Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects and strong experience in solution development and implementation. Experience leading cross-functional projects.

Process Improvement: Demonstrated ability to apply process improvement and problem-solving techniques including, but not limited to Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to address issues such as operational and quality process improvement. Helps in developing a Lean Six Sigma organization, driven to improve performance, cost, throughput, and quality control metrics.

Mentor: Demonstrated experience mentoring, coaching, and training junior staff. Ability to provide solutions to complex IE problems involving a combination of labor, space, and technological changes under multiple constraints arising from resource availability, safety and regulatory requirements.

Engineering Expertise: A thorough knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines and designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects.

Problem Solving: Experience leading teams through a problem-solving methodology (Lean Six Sigma projects and process improvement projects) using process and value stream mapping.

Leadership: Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification from an accredited institution is highly desired.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring Green Belts, Black Belt candidates, project teams, and production personnel.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Experience in process improvement, process engineering, or industrial engineering.
  • Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis. Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.
  • Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.
  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
