Inspection and Diagnostics Technologist (Engineering Technologist 1)

What You Will Do

J-2 (Dynamic Structure and Design & Engineering) is seeking an Engineering Technologist who is looking to apply modeling with hands on experienced with modern inspection methods utilizing 3-D scanning to support the groups confinement vessel mission. J-2's mission with the HSEES (Hydrodynamic Subcritical Experiments Execution Support) Program provides cradle to grave design, procurement and operations to support the use of impulsively driven testing with confinement vessels, in support of stockpile stewardship. The selected candidate will join our vessel repair and inspection team and will support evaluation of confinement vessels in use at both LANL's NM and NV sites which include DARHT and PULSE facilities. In addition, this role will support our production team for evaluating and baselining new vessel weldments as well as interacting with our structural mechanical team in assessing these assets for continued use. J-2 is looking for a candidate who wants to work within a fast paced, multi-discipline group that spans expertise from mechanical, civil, and structural engineers, chemistry, welding, assembly, explosives teams, inspection and an elite decontamination team.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 1 ($85,900-139,900)

  • Working knowledge in utilizing 3D CAD Systems, design and drafting experience and basic understanding of GD&T.
  • Experience with inspection and metrology tooling such as handheld 3-D laser scanners, calipers, micrometers, and profilometers.
  • Demonstrated experience in formal technical report writing skills, formal record keeping, and procedure writing, and basic understanding of statistics and analysis.
  • Working experience in following and assisting in preparing engineering specifications for structures, systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical drawings, ability to read and interpret.
  • Demonstrated experience with hand and power tools.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in NDE methods such as mag particle, liquid penetrant, and visual inspection
  • Experience with Creaform 3-D Scanners with Polyworks Inspector and Creaform VX Elements Software
  • Welding experience
  • Basic understanding of ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code
  • Experience working in hazardous operations such as radiological contamination areas, confined spaces

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to speak, reading vision, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, carrying 10-20 pounds, lifting 30+ pounds, and work in confined spaces.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
