The Materials Science & Technology Group 8 is seeking a highly motivated post-master's student for the advanced characterization of metals using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The student will have the opportunity to apply advanced characterization techniques including EBSD, 3D-EBSD, HR-EBSD, 4D-STEM to study the microstructural fingerprint of structural alloys and pure metals, gaining deeper insights into their deformation mechanisms. The student will utilize advanced analysis tools such as METIS3D, ATEX, and py4DSTEM for data interpretation. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with good communication, documentation, and organizational skills. This work will support various national efforts in material characterization and development for extreme environments.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- 2 years of experience in operating a transmission electron microscope
- Proficient knowledge in theory of transmission electron microscopy
- 1 year of experience using a focused-ion-beam microscope to prepare TEM samples
- 1 year of experience using a scanning electron microscope for advanced characterization including EBSD and HR-EBSD
- Experience in metallographic preparation of metals for EBSD
- Proficiency in one of the following coding languages: C++, Python, MATLAB
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with STEM imaging, nano-diffraction
- Experience with HR-TEM
- Experience with HR-EBSD analysis
- Strong analytical skill with a programing language
Education: Master's degree in materials science or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 2 years.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
