What You Will Do

As a Learning Specialist 2, you become an integral member of the Institutional Support Services team, spearheading comprehensive training support. Your engagement involves collaborating with customers, stakeholders, sponsors, and regulators to ensure that our training programs not only meet, but exceed customer needs, regulatory imperatives, contractual obligations, and the mission agenda. Your knowledge will be the driving force behind the development and maintenance of a training program that stands as a testament to excellence, setting a benchmark for industry standards.

As a Learning Specialist 2, you will:
  • Analyze training needs: Use data and organizational insights to assess training gaps and requirements.
  • Design and develop programs: Collaborate with subject matter experts to create training materials that align with customer needs, regulatory requirements, and the Laboratory's mission.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness: Measure and report on the success of training programs, ensuring continuous improvement through regular evaluations.
  • Project manage training initiatives: Utilize project management skills to create data-driven timelines, milestones, and goals that ensure the successful deployment of training solutions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders: Work with customers, sponsors, and regulators to ensure all training programs are compliant with applicable standards and effectively meet stakeholder needs.
  • Maintain training quality: Contribute to the development and refinement of training and maintain up-to-date documentation.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements - Learning Specialist 2:

Technical Expertise:

  • Awareness of the systematic approach to training methodologies (e.g., ADDIE / SAM model).
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and performance-based training.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite and other common software tools.
Interpersonal & Communication Skills:
  • Customer service skills; able to provide clear and supportive guidance in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse personnel, including external stakeholders and executive management.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information to multiple audiences
Strategic & Analytical Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize data from various sources for high-level decision making.
  • Ability to research and identify requirements as they pertain to organizational or regulatory needs and requirements.
  • Project management skills
Education/Experience:
  • A baccalaureate degree and 4 years of related experience are required for this position.
  • The degree should be in Training, Education, or a related filed.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation may be considered.


Desired Requirements:
  • Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) orders and standards and Laboratory policies and procedures pertaining to training.
  • Sound understanding of the Laboratory's learning management system (UTrain) and related information data systems (i.e., Oracle).
  • Knowledge of process improvement concepts
  • Sound understanding of the systematic approach to training processes.
  • Knowledge of document control processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver content to all levels of personnel.

Education: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
