- City, State: Los Alamos, New Mexico
- Recruiter Name: Thompson, Larry Douglas
- Recruiter Email: larrydtho@lanl.gov
The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Plutonium Infrastructure (ALDPI) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) supports the infrastructure required to meet plutonium pit production deliverables. Within ALDPI, LIP-DD Decontamination & Decommissioning is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the removal of gloveboxes and associated systems within TA-55. This work supports Line-Item installation projects and prepares the Laboratory for its new role in weapons production.
You will provide management oversight for safe, secure, and compliant D&D execution within an operating nuclear facility. Responsibilities include field execution oversight, integrated scheduling, resource utilization, performance reporting, and project closeout to prepare space for follow-on installations. During assigned off-normal shifts, including nights and weekends, you will provide management oversight across multiple organizations and projects, establish execution priorities, address resource and work-area conflicts, and maintain effective shift turnover. This position reports to a Project-Program Director or MOP 5 within LIP-DD.
This position will be filled at either the Manager of Projects 3 (MOP3) or Manager of Projects 4 (MOP4) level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Candidates selected at the MOP4 level will assume the additional responsibilities described below.
Manager of Projects 3 ($128,000-$215,900)
As a MOP3, you will lead integrated planning, work readiness, scheduling, resource management, and execution oversight for assigned LIP-DD projects. You may serve as the lead project manager and as line manager for deployed project managers and other assigned personnel. During assigned off-normal shifts, you will provide management oversight of work performed by multiple organizations and project teams within your assigned authority. Key responsibilities include:
- Safety and compliance: Implement Integrated Safety Management (ISM) line management responsibilities by integrating safety, security, environmental protection, and quality into work planning and execution. Maintain field engagement, encourage a questioning attitude, address deficiencies, and pause or stop work when conditions or requirements warrant.
- Work readiness: Ensure work proceeds under approved Integrated Work Documents (IWDs), established controls, and applicable facility requirements using trained and qualified personnel. Coordinate readiness reviews and resolve prerequisites before field execution.
- Scheduling and resource reporting: Develop and manage project scope, schedules, resources, costs, risks, and execution plans. Track shift, daily, and weekly resource utilization and work progress; identify cost and schedule variances; and implement or direct corrective actions. Provide accurate status, resource availability, chargeability, and forecast reports to management and stakeholders.
- Shift management oversight: Provide management oversight across multiple organizations and projects during assigned off-normal shifts, including nights and weekends. Establish shift priorities, monitor field execution, resolve resource and work-area conflicts, and direct actions within assigned authority. Escalate unresolved issues to Shift Oversight Management or the designated management chain, and provide clear turnover on work status, controls, constraints, and pending decisions.
- Execution constraints and dependencies: Maintain visibility of engineering, procurement, work control, nuclear material management, waste management, and installation dependencies that affect execution. Monitor prerequisite completion, identify constraints, assign resolution actions within delegated authority, and escalate issues that threaten safe execution or schedule commitments.
- Personnel management: Manage assigned personnel responsibilities, including hiring and onboarding, work assignments, headcount and budget forecasting, training, continuous performance feedback, annual performance discussions, career development, and recognition.
- Project completion: Oversee removal documentation, configuration management status, waste disposition interfaces, and project closeout. Verify completion status and report remaining conditions affecting follow-on installation work.
- Management practices and continuous improvement: Apply Laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable project requirements. Promote repeatable planning and execution practices, share lessons learned, and improve customer service and delivery performance.
Additional Responsibilities for Manager of Projects 4 ($141,500-$238,300)
In addition to the MOP3 responsibilities, a MOP4 will provide broader management oversight and exercise greater independent judgment across multiple complex or interdependent LIP-DD projects and organizational work fronts. The MOP4 will lead integrated scheduling and resource reporting and provide management oversight across assigned organizations and projects during off-normal shifts. Responsibilities include:
- Develop integrated execution strategies, field schedules, and portfolio priorities that align D&D removals, facility availability, waste disposition, and installation milestones. Evaluate work sequencing and schedule logic, resolve conflicting priorities, and recommend recovery strategies when execution threatens delivery commitments.
- Lead and develop project managers and assigned execution teams across competing work fronts. Provide management oversight across multiple organizations and projects during assigned off-normal shifts; establish execution priorities, resolve resource tradeoffs, and direct or recommend changes to staffing, sequencing, or execution methods within delegated authority.
- Track shift, daily, and weekly resource utilization across assigned organizations and projects. Produce executive reports on resource health, availability, utilization, and chargeability, together with cost, schedule, and staffing forecasts. Maintain current resource data and conduct periodic checks of reporting accuracy and data integrity.
- Verify coding accuracy and logic integrity of field execution schedules. Produce specialized scheduling products and forecast reports as assigned, identify schedule conflicts and resource gaps, and provide practical solutions to project management. Escalate unresolved conflicts to Shift Oversight Management with recommended actions.
- Establish and refine scheduling workflows, reporting methods, desk instructions, and the management business rhythm. Lead regular schedule and resource reviews, cross-train team members, and introduce appropriate automation and continuous improvements. Present performance, risks, and recommended actions to Shift Oversight Management, senior leadership, and customers.
