Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) plays a crucial role in maintaining the nation's nuclear deterrent and advancing scientific research. At the heart of LANL's mission is the Pit Technologies (PT) Division, a key component of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). This division is at the forefront of manufacturing operations at Technical Area 55 (TA-55), a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to plutonium research and pit production.
The PT Division is currently in growth mode in terms of scope, budget, and personnel, and is currently looking to fill out the management chain in support of the Division's vision. The Pit Technologies Division Office has seven openings for a Manufacturing Manger 3 (Deputy Group Leader) position in various groups, including PT-2 (Plutonium Machining), PT-3 (Plutonium Assembly and Welding), PT-4 (Plutonium Foundry), PT-5 (Plutonium Product Engineering), PT-6 (Production Technical Support), PT-7 (Plutonium NDE & Inspection), and PT-8 (Plutonium Tooling). These positions will have the title of Deputy Group Leader and will assist in the oversight of Pit Technologies employees and activities within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production. The selected candidate will assist in establishing a vision and path for the future for their respective group by ensuring the timely and successful delivery of plutonium pit-related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability.
The successful candidate will partner with the PT Division Office, the Group Leaders, First Line Managers (FLMs), Manufacturing Manager 1's (MM1s), and other Deputy Group Leaders across the Division to provide consistent technical and administrative leadership in support of meeting objective of re-establishing rate production of plutonium pits at TA-55. Activities will involve operational supervision of group activities, supporting the Group's strategic and tactical planning, assisting with developing and advocating for programs, promoting effective partnering with other LANL and outside organizations, oversight of group finances, human resource management, and quality, safety & security management.
The selected candidate will use their skills and expertise to organize and guide research and technical efforts, while interacting with peers and other leaders for strategic purposes. You will facilitate hiring, mentoring staff, and building strong technical teams to fulfill mission objectives. You will contribute to advanced manufacturing and development concepts for pit technology modernization and the PT Division Office strategy. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Partner with the Group Leader in planning, organizing, and managing technical activities of the group.
- Work with all PT groups to develop and foster effective teams to meet customer goals.
- Plan, organize, and use group resources effectively within budget.
- Utilize, nurture, and develop personnel to promote excellence at all levels and establish an environment of trust and mutual respect.
- Assist the Group Leader in recruiting, staffing, and developing and retention; performance appraisals and employee development; addressing and resolving personnel issues; time and labor approvals and salary management; overall quality, and effectiveness, planning for capabilities; and security issues.
- Build and maintain effective workforce development including nurturing of the group's existing capabilities and the fostering of new, mission relevant, and technical capabilities.
- Assist with financial management, oversight, and staffing planning and forecasting.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in executing programmatic work in compliance with nuclear facility requirements and the authorization basis specified under 10 CFR 830 Nuclear Safety Management and 10 CFR 835 Occupational Radiation Protection.
- Experience executing work in compliance with DOE O 474.2 Nuclear Material and Accountability.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the technical and operational discipline of Conduct of Operations DOE O 422.1.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the technical and operational discipline of Weapons Quality Policy NAP 401.1.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and proven ability in production operations, preferably nuclear processing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and proven ability in implementing, enforcing, and providing guidance for Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.
Engineering Expertise
- Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical, material science, or other engineering field.
- Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing planned work in a manufacturing environment.
- Thorough knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, analyzing, testing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
- Demonstrated experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing or reviewing a complete project, system, or component.
- Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing, system, and component testing operations.
- Demonstrated experience developing, codifying, and validating engineering requirements.
Leadership and Management
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory objectives.
- Demonstrated experience in managing personnel in a production environment including operators/technicians, engineers, technologists, and scientists.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the Laboratory's quality management system.
- Enhance technical and professional expertise of early career staff through active mentoring and training.
- Demonstrated experience growing and retaining a staff of engineers, project leads, managers/supervisors and/or operators in a production environment.
Communication and Teamwork
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to express detailed ideas to a wide variety of audiences clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Master's degree is strongly preferred.
DOE 426.2A: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science or technology, and 4 years of nuclear experience. Job-related education or experience may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may be used to substitute up to 50 percent of the experience requirement per section I 4.e of the Contractor Requirements Document (CRD).
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience working in a nuclear regulatory environment.
- Demonstrated experience working in a nuclear facility.
- Demonstrated experience working in a glovebox processing environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a rate production manufacturing organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working towards production metrics.
- Glovebox Operator qualification, or previous glovebox experience highly desirable.
Work Schedule: Pit Technologies is staffing for production work 7 days per week. This position may require 7-day coverage and therefore may require working a shift schedule that includes weekends. Individuals typically work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. PT-2 Plutonium Machining - is responsible for machining plutonium parts. Work includes weapons component manufacturing, pit production, and surveillance.
PT-3 Plutonium Assembly and Welding- is responsible for the welding and assembly of pits and their components. Operations include the assembly and welding of weapons-related and non-weapons-related assemblies, which contain plutonium-239 metal. In addition to these efforts, PT-3 is responsible for assembly of sub-critical experiments, science campaign work, and Department of Homeland Security and global security efforts.
PT-4 Plutonium Foundry - is responsible for alloying, casting, and heat-treating plutonium parts. Work includes weapons component manufacturing, pit production, and surveillance.
PT-5 Plutonium Product Engineering - is responsible for the configuration management of plutonium products, primarily pit manufacturing, pit surveillance and subcritical experiments during the entire product lifecycle from development through production.
PT-6 Production Technical Support- is responsible for providing technical and project management expertise to aid in the transition from manufacturing development pits to pit production.
PT-7 Plutonium NDE &Inspection - is responsible for the evaluation of pits and their components. Operations include the non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and inspection of weapons related and non-weapons related assemblies, which contain plutonium-239 metal. PT-7 is also responsible for the NDE associated with pit surveillance activities supporting the Annual Assessment.
PT-8 Plutonium Tooling - is responsible for providing tooling design and manufacturing to aid in to pit production operations.
Candidates will not apply to specific deputy group leader positions within the PT Division groups, rather they will be placed based on the needs of specific groups according to their strengths.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
