MP&CL Metrology Engineer 1/2 (Quality Engineer 1/2)

What You Will Do

Join the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL) and support the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. The MP&CL provides National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibrations for LANL programs, operations, and research organizations that use measurement and test equipment (M&TE) to take high impact measurements.

The MP&CL performs dimensional, electrical, and physical calibrations. We strive to provide the highest quality calibrations and exceptional customer service to ensure high impact measurements at LANL are reliable and accurate whether the measurement is taken on a laboratory bench top or firing mound during an explosives experiment. Providing this service requires a dedicated and committed team with a common goal - to safely support LANL's mission by providing superior calibration services to our customers


This position will be filled at either the Metrology Engineer 2 or 3
level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Metrology Engineer 1 ($77,300 - $126,00)

The successful candidate will be required to use engineering principles and concepts to support metrology projects, activities, and organizational objectives. The successful candidate will be able to integrate engineering and quality concepts and principles to ensure compliance with Federal and local Metrology Program requirements. Ability to perform hands-on work with calibration systems, equipment, and software. Experience working within an ISO 17025 accredited calibration program.

Metrology Engineer 2 ($85,400 - $139,600)

In addition to the duties outlined above the Metrology Engineer 2 will be required to provide technical leadership to S&CL staff and customers as well as work closely with the team leader. The Metrology Engineer 2 will have advanced experience with implementing ISO 17025, supporting and maintaining accreditation, and developing technical calibration procedures.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge/understanding of engineering concepts applicable to metrology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in teams to get projects accomplished on time.
  • Experience working within an ISO 17025 accredited calibration program.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Experience developing and using measurement uncertainty budgets.
  • Knowledge of calibration system/equipment operations and maintenance, metrology calculations, and applications of engineering methods to dimensional, electrical, or physical measurements.

Additional Job Requirements for Metrology Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated experience commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting calibration systems/equipment/software.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing solutions to a diverse range of calibration challenges using engineering principles, concepts, and calculations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing measurement uncertainty budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing ISO17025 and Calibration Laboratory accreditation requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, developing, and implementing technical projects supporting organizational goals.

Lower Level Education Required: BS in engineering or related field directly applicable to metrology and a minimum of 1 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Higher Level Education Required: BS/MS degree in engineering or related field directly applicable to metrology and a minimum of 5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
