Nuclear Enterprise Assurance (NEA) within the Production Assurance Division Office (PA-DO) works to establish and integrate its core capabilities into business practices, mitigate potential consequences of adversarial subversion, and provide reasonable assurance in LANL's nuclear weapon enabling capabilities.

PA-DO NEA seeks to hire a Data Science Integration Technologist to perform work focused on the design and implementation of analytical solutions for risk evaluation and decision support. Solutions will be developed by an ideal candidate through a combination of expertise in statistical reasoning, AI/ML, formal methods, and tool-agnostic programming. Work will support diverse NEA programmatic functions (e.g., Operational Technology Assurance, Digital Assurance, Supply Chain Risk Management, Incident Response) and enable maturation of core operational capabilities. An ideal candidate will effectively communicate technical work to audiences with diverse areas of expertise and produce intellectually rigorous documentation that supports risk mitigation recommendations. This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Project Leadership and work closely with the NEA Assurance Analyst staff. Additional responsibilities of this role include (but are not limited to):

  • Support development of program strategy for data science integration that supports effective requirement and milestone execution; formalize strategy as policy.
  • Identify relevant internal/external data resources, build repeatable ingestion and analysis pipelines, represent findings as visualizations or deployable Graphic User Interfaces (GUI).
  • Leverage analytical findings to provide specific insight about risk with direct relevance to LANL nuclear weapon enabling capabilities.
  • Effectively balance timely project execution and exploratory/frontier analytical methodologies.
  • Interface often with internal/external partner organizations; collaborate in support of capabilities benchmarking and development.
  • Mature program metrics by finding creative ways to use existing data or creating new data.
  • Be ambitious, focused, and creative.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements

Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,200 - $176,000)

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Proficient knowledge of analytical methods (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Proficient knowledge of programming Python and/or R languages are preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective communication of technical subjects (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated experience providing training related specifically to analytical methods and programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.
  • Ability to obtain a Q and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance which requires US citizenship and the ability to complete a polygraph.


Engineering Technologist 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)

In addition to the skills of Engineering Technologist 3, the Engineering Technologist 4 will be required to possess:

  • Expert-level knowledge of analytical methods, applied specifically in Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) or National Security contexts.
  • Expert-level knowledge of programming, applied specifically in Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) or National Security contexts.
  • Proven experience effectively communicating technical subjects (represented by conference talks or technical publications).
  • Proven experience providing training related specifically to analytical methods and programming in Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) or National Security contexts.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts (i.e., established professional networks in NSE or National Security environments).


Education/Experience at Level 3: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Level 4: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Education: Degree in Statistics or Data Science is preferred
  • Experience: Foundational knowledge of formal methods (as used in computer science, i.e., mathematical specification of system behavior and the use of logical reasoning, proof techniques, or model checking to verify correctness and invariant preservation).
  • Experience: Familiarity with strengths and limitations of conventional AI/ML frameworks, and ability to develop custom models and algorithms when existing libraries or frameworks are insufficient.
  • Experience: Foundational knowledge of applications development, particularly the ability to translate analytical outputs into deployable, user-facing monitoring tools (e.g., graphical user interfaces or interactive dashboards).
  • Nature of Work: Experience interacting with DOE/NNSA, Nuclear Security Enterprise sites and complexes, or Department of Defense (War), particularly in a context related to the nature of this position.
  • Program Requirements: Knowledge of NNSA SD 452.4-1 or other subversion and vulnerability assessment approaches.


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. This position will require occasional work travel, no more than 10%.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
