What You Will Do
Advanced Nuclear Technology (NEN-2) answers crucial questions for US nuclear weapons, foreign nuclear threats and nuclear criticality safety through unique experimental and measurement expertise and facilities. We are seeking graduate students interested in nuclear science/engineering related careers who want to make an impact in one or more areas of our Global Security mission.
Ideal candidates will take an active role in directing research related to subcritical and critical experiment design and analysis. The students will participate across multiple teams and be exposed to various aspects of the nuclear data pipeline, including travel for activities at the Nuclear Criticality Experimental Research Center (NCERC) located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Locally, this will include attending group meetings within NEN-2 and attending seminars given internally by other groups at the laboratory.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Located in Northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Technical Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and skills in science or engineering while pursuing an advanced science or engineering degree.
- Communications: Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context
- Teamwork: Experience working in a team environment
- Education/Experience: Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in a science or engineering discipline with an overall GPA of 3.2 (out of 4.0) or higher. Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Students preparing to begin a graduate program of study must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an appropriate degree program.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience or advanced course work in nuclear nonproliferation, design of radiation detection systems or nuclear reactor design
- Experience in Python and MCNP and nuclear data processing tools (NJOY, AMPEX, PREPRO)
- Knowledge of neutron noise techniques and detector arrays (Rossi-α, Feynman-Y, etc.)
- Ability to obtain a Q Clearance. Obtaining a Q clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
