Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 (Fire Protection Engineer)

What You Will Do

Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by performing total fire protection designs for a plutonium production facility including sprinkler design, fire alarm design and passive fire protection design. Fire Protection Engineers will work on dynamic teams to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.
  • Thorough knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of water-based fire suppression systems and supporting hydraulic calculations.
  • Advanced knowledge of building fire alarm systems and supporting electrical calculations.
  • Expert knowledge/understanding of NFPA codes and standards specifically creating designs that meet the requirements of NPFA 13 and NFPA 72.
  • Advanced knowledge and use of AutoSprink or SprinkCAD or an equivalent hydraulic modeling software.
  • Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Advanced ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Nuclear Facility Engineer 3 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully-qualified.

Training/Certifications: Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

Advanced knowledge of DOE standards applicable to fire protection design implementation.

Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
