Nuclear Facility Engineer (Safety Basis Analyst 4)

The Safety Basis Division (SB-DO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops and maintains Safety Basis documents for nuclear facilities and applies a diverse set of nuclear facility engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.

We are seeking Nuclear Facility Engineer 4 to support the Laboratory mission through the Plutonium mission, facilities and associated capital projects. Roles and responsibilities include:
  • Provide nuclear engineering services to ensure facilities are designed, constructed, modified, and maintained to meet nuclear and non-nuclear safety and mission expectations in a cost effective, safe, and compliant manner.
  • Lead the development of and review of nuclear safety analyses, engineering calculations, and facility/experimental designs.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish nuclear safety requirements, scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Lead safety design reviews and hazard evaluations.
  • Support the implementation of facility/experiment nuclear safety requirements and readiness activities.
  • Perform technical and quality reviews of safety basis documents for nuclear facilities and support facilities.
  • Obtain qualification as a LANL safety basis analyst through the Safety Basis Training and Qualification Program

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Advanced expert experience in nuclear facilities safety, operation, and design
  • Advanced expert ability in preparing calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering problems
  • Demonstrated capability in successfully developing internal and external customer relationships achieving a high degree of customer satisfaction. Expertise in negotiation with customers and support organizations and resolving conflicts
  • Knowledge/experience and proficiency in DOE orders and standards on facility hazard categorization, safety basis development, technical safety requirement development, and the Unreviewed question process
  • Advanced ability for self-directed work, planning, and prioritization
  • Advanced ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Advanced ability in coaching, and mentoring of early career engineers
  • Advanced ability to communicate well, both written and verbally

Education/Experience:
  • Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Extensive knowledge of LANL activities and nuclear operations including project execution and management, legal, procurement, construction, environmental safety, and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge/experience of LANL Safety Basis Processes; LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures; and DOE Orders and Standards related to nuclear facility design, construction, and operations.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
