P-3 Group Leader (R&D Manager 4)

What You Will Do

The Group Leader (GL) of the Nuclear and Particle Physics and Applications Group (P-3) will report to the Physics (P) Division Leader and provide scientific, technical, and operational leadership of a group of approximately 45staff, postdocs, students, contractors, and guest scientists. The group carries out basic and applied research at LANSCE and other facilities around the world in the areas of fundamental symmetries, heavy ion research, nucleon structure physics, and nuclear data.

The GL, working with two half-time deputy group leaders, will provide leadership of the Group's activities effectively championing capabilities and personnel. The successful candidate will function as a key part of the division management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of P Division, including planning scientific and programmatic directions, and ensuring sound management practices. The successful candidate will support the Group's strategic and tactical planning directed toward maintaining and achieving the long-range Group vision and mission. They will help in development of the group's and division's strategic plan, developing programs, promoting effective partnering with other LANL and outside organizations, oversight of group finances, human resource management, and safety & security management.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Record of successful research in a scientific field relevant to at least one of the Group's core research areas as demonstrated by publications or reports.
  • Experience with successful program development and demonstrated scientific and organizational leadership as evidenced by the ability to form, organize, administer, and lead scientific projects or teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional development and mentoring of employees including personal mentoring and establishing mentoring relationships
  • Experience in recruitment and hiring.
  • Financial management skills and commitment to good business practices as demonstrated by performance and accomplishments in previous work assignments.
  • Record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, letters of reference, interactions with colleagues both inside and outside the Lab through presentations and publications.
  • Record of commitment to safety, security, quality, diversity in the workplace, and affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and work productively with group members, the division office and supporting staff to safely and securely execute the P-3 experimental program.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with P-3 user facilities at LANSCE (Lujan, WNR, UCN) and external user facilities (BNL, FNL, ANL, FRIB, ORNL, Notre Dame, CERN) or the management of comparable experimental facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build productive partnerships and new programs with other groups at Los Alamos.
  • Recruiting and mentoring the world's top talent within the expertise of P-3.
  • Broad view of national and international nuclear physics to leverage the unique expertise within P-3 to meet programmatic needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with all levels of management.
  • Working knowledge of LANL financial, management, and ES&H practices.
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn Laboratory administrative policies and procedures.

Education/Experience Required: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
