Proton Beam Scientist/pRad Radiographer- Scientist 2/3 | Los Alamos, NM | Los Alamos National Laboratory

Proton Beam Scientist/pRad Radiographer- Scientist 2/3

What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply.

The Physics Division is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in: nuclear physics within and beyond the Standard Model, weapons physics, remote sensing, and fluid dynamics and numerous other topics. We support a diverse program that includes scientists of many nationalities and backgrounds, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, unclassified and classified experiments and analyses.

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

P-1 Dynamic Imaging and Radiography, part of the Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), is seeking outstanding candidates to join the proton radiography team. LANL is an international leader in dynamic proton radiography and operates the Los Alamos Proton Radiography Facility (pRad) at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). The pRad facility uses the high-energy LANSCE proton accelerator to radiography dynamically driven experiments in support of LANL's national security and stockpile stewardship missions.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with a large team of staff members including engineers, technologists, technicians, and other scientists to conduct experiments at pRad. Additionally, candidates will participate in the design and implementation of a potential new proton radiography facility, ensuring their work directly impacts future research capabilities and scientific advancements.

Scientist 2 $106,400 - $176,000

The successful Scientist 2 candidate will become an integral member of the pRad team and contribute to both the operation and continued development of this unique experimental capability. Depending on the candidate's background, interests, and experience, responsibilities may include several of the following areas:
  • Evaluation of advanced scintillator and imaging detector systems for high-resolution and short decay time scintillators.
  • Analysis and interpretation of dynamic radiographic data, including development of quantitative image-analysis methods, image reconstruction, and comparison with physics and hydrodynamic models.
  • Leadership of daily experimental operations at the pRad facility, coordinating accelerator, detector, beamline, diagnostic, and experimental activities to safely and successfully execute complex dynamic experiments.
  • Evaluation of beam transport, including testing of magnetic optics lens and supporting the existing lens systems in system tuning and focusing.
  • Radiographic support for pRad users, including experimental design, beamline configuration determination, and beam energy optimization.

Scientist 3 $128,000 - $216,900

In addition to the Scientist 2 responsibilities, a Scientist 3 candidate will:
  • Development of advanced scintillator and imaging detector systems for high-resolution and short decay time scintillators. This R&D effort may include detector characterization, design optimization, and implementation in dynamic experiments.
  • Proton beam transport and beamline design for additional pRad stations, including design of new magnetic optics lens systems for current and future capabilities.
  • Development of new experimental techniques and instrumentation that improve spatial resolution, temporal resolution, detector efficiency, quantitative accuracy, or overall experimental capability.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a strong background and publication record in experimental nuclear and particle physics, or closely related field. Evidence of good communication skills is also required.

Prior experience with one or more of the following is not required but is desired:
  • Experience in neutral or charge particle detection
  • Particle detectors for nuclear and high energy physics
  • Data analysis of experiments
  • Radiographic image analysis

  • Experience with accelerator design or operation
  • Particle-transport simulation
  • Experience in shock physics experiments

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

At Scientist 3 level, a successful candidate will have experience leading projects with an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated experience as a technical subject matter expert in at least one of the following is desired:
  • Radiographic image analysis
  • Accelerator design or operation
  • Particle-transport simulation
  • Shock physics experiments

Education/Experience at Scientist 2: Positions requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.
