What You Will Do


This position will be filled at either the QPA Specialist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills, education, and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


Come join our team! This position is based in the Institutional Quality (IQPA-IQ) group and reports to the IQPA-IQ Institutional Quality Programs Manager. The selected candidate's primary responsibility will be to ensure product quality through effective procurement quality processes.

QPA Specialist 1 ($64,700-$101,400)

  • Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Procurement Quality: Review and authorize procurement transactions using applicable procurement quality requirements.
  • Assessments & Audit: Support audits and assessments of institutional and supplier quality programs to ensure compliance with contractual quality requirements. This can include travel.
  • Software Quality: Support software quality assurance activity through improving procedures, tools, and providing guidance to customers regarding compliance.
  • Nonconformance: Support institutional nonconformance control and report program coordinator through interaction with the Nonconformance Reporting (NCR) tool, deployed resource support, and addressing customer questions.
  • Provide input to reports, briefings, and documentation for IQPA-IQ program coordinators, lead auditors, customers, and vendors.

QPA Specialist 2 ($78,700-$125,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate would:

  • Procurement Quality: Serve as subject matter expert on procurement quality process and tools for issue resolution.
  • Assessments & Audits: Serve as an auditor and assist lead auditor.
  • Software Quality: Conduct determinations, categorizations and software risk level management.
  • Nonconformance: Serve as subject matter expert on NCR tool and point of contact for issue resolution.
  • All: Prepare reports, briefings and documentation for IQPA-IQ program coordinators, lead auditors, customers,
  • regulators and vendors. Contribute ideas and content to process improvement (procedures, training material, etc.).

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Quality Assurance Requirements: Some working knowledge and experience of quality assurance requirements, policies, and procedures such as DOE 0 414.1E, ASME NQA-1 2008/2009(a), and 10 CFR 830 Subpart A. Basic experience and knowledge on flowing down requirements to customers, vendors and subcontractors.
  • Self-directed and Teamwork: Proven success working independently and in a team environment with some supervision.
  • Customer Service: Experience utilizing strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Decision Making: Some experience supporting and/or making effective decisions and understanding risks related to technical issues.
Additional Job Requirements for QPA Specialist 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Quality Assurance Requirements: Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience with quality assurance requirements, policies, and procedures, including DOE O 414.1E, ASME NQA-1 (2008/2009a), and 10 CFR 830 Subpart A. Demonstrated ability to ensure proper flow-down of these requirements to customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Self-directed and Teamwork: Demonstrated success working both independently and collaboratively, effectively prioritizing and scheduling activities to achieve objectives.
  • Customer Service: Strong customer service skills that utilize effective written and verbal communication skills. Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment. Skills in engaging people, strong interpersonal, communications, and team building skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage interpersonal conflict.
  • Decision Making: Demonstrated ability to make sound, effective decisions and assess associated technical risks to support project and organizational objectives.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in a relevant field or combination of technical certification and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Qualification: NQA-1 Auditor qualification (specific to assessment and audit roles).
  • Technical Reviews: Some experience reviewing technical documents for completeness and compliance.
  • Continuous Improvement: Some experience participating in process improvement principles and practices such as lean continuous improvement.
  • Relationship Management: Some experience managing or supporting relationships, conflict resolution, and collaborative problem solving.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

The Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance Division (IQPA) provides contractor assurance, institutional quality assurance (QA), performance management, and independent assessment services to customers throughout the Laboratory. The Institutional Quality (IQ) group supports the Laboratory by assisting organizations to ensure quality work is executed consistently and effectively across the institution. The IQ mission is to integrate quality requirements into engineering processes, validate that policies and programs meet regulatory and customer requirements.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
