Utilize your radiation protection (RP) and leadership skills to do something that matters! Los Alamos National Laboratory-one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions in the world-is looking for an experienced radiation protection professional to become a key member of the Radiation Protection Services management team, providing leadership for the Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration (RIC) Program.
Reporting to the Radiation Protection Services (RP-SVS) Group Leader within the Radiation Protection Division, the Deputy Group Leader (DGL) is responsible for technical leadership, strategic direction, oversight, and leadership of the RIC Program. This includes overseeing a staff of approximately 23 professionals and technicians responsible for maintaining over 10,000 individual radiation detection instruments and a budget of over $4 million. The DGL is responsible for strategic planning, ensuring high quality customer service, and maintaining effective relationships with vendors and principal stakeholders.
As a part of the RP-SVS Group, you will help achieve RP Division organizational goals for programmatic, operational, and business excellence in support of the LANL mission. You will promote safety, security, and quality in all operations, exercise prudent fiscal responsibility and property management, promote teamwork within the organization and across the Laboratory, and promote a positive work environment and safety culture.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Leadership experience in Health Physics, including experience in radiation detection instrumentation, instrument calibration, and implementation of RP instrumentation standards and requirements.
• Proven leadership experience in managing a program that adheres to radiation protection program procedures, policies, and conduct of operations.
• Demonstrated track record of effective technical leadership, emphasizing organizational skills, strategic planning, team building, program development, project management, budgeting, financial management, and employee development.
• Experience in interpreting and applying radiation protection programs, DOE regulations and guidance, and industry standards relevant to radiation protection instrumentation.
• Demonstrated expertise in developing and leading process improvement initiatives.
• Proficiency in evaluating metrics, events, and performance feedback to improve programs, manage risks, and address vulnerabilities.
• Demonstrated effective experience in interacting, communicating, and collaborating with a diversity of customers and stakeholders and in working with all levels of staff and management.
• Record of leading an organization in strategic planning, technical advocacy, innovation, and operational excellence in executing technical programs, setting objectives, and meeting milestones.
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q-Clearance.
Training/Certifications: None
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, or a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in an applicable field.
• Experience administering the requirements of a Radiation Instrumentation Program.
• Professional level experience in radiation instrumentation and radiation detection methods.
• Knowledge of LANL radiation protection functions, capabilities, and the spectrum of LANL radiological operations.
• Professional-level experience in radiation protection programs at DOE and/or NRC facilities.
• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Work Schedule:

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
