This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Automation, Robotics and Controls Group (E-3) is a multidisciplinary engineering organization that provides controls, robotics, and data acquisition solutions to a wide variety of applications to meet the Los Alamos National Laboratory Mission. E-3's capabilities include the design, development, fabrication, and deployment of custom electronics and control systems including mobile robotics, industrial manipulators, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, and firmware/software development.
E-3 is looking for motivated early to mid-career engineers to work closely with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians on electronics design and development for robotics, controls, and data acquisition systems that support the LANL mission. Successful candidates will contribute to a variety of projects depending upon relevant skillsets.
R&D Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)
At this level, you will work under the direction of senior staff members to contribute to system design and execution of projects related to one of the technical disciplines listed below. As an R&D Engineer 1, you will be expected to contribute to technical efforts as directed by more senior staff members as well as develop your technical skills and abilities to meet the group's needs.
R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)
In addition to the responsibilities outlined at Level 1, you will provide technical leadership for junior engineers as well as be expected to independently execute technical projects working directly with outside organizations according to relevant skillsets.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Expertise
- Demonstrated coursework and/or design experience in one or more of the following engineering focus areas:
- Control System Design: Enclosure level design of PLC/Embedded control systems including schematic and layout of systems for specialized applications.
- Analog Design: Design and analysis of front-end circuits for high speed data acquisition and conversion as well as mixed signal systems at a PCB Level.
- Digital Design: FPGA-based design and implementation of high-speed data acquisition and digital signal processing for embedded systems using Xilinx Vivado or similar platforms.
- System Integration: Experience with electronic product realization and integration, including circuit and system troubleshooting to integrate multiple component systems using system drivers and APIs as appropriate.
- Robotics: Experience with the development and realization of mobile robotic systems and manipulators to integrate motion planning algorithms as well as a variety of end-effector, tooling, and sensor integration.
Collaborative Team Work
Experience contributing to technical engineering efforts as a member of a collaborative team with the ability to communicate work progress towards shared milestones and deliverables. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively as part of a larger technical team.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Technical Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading technical efforts related to the above disciplines. Ability to direct junior staff and engineers to execute technical work. Set work direction and goals in order to efficiently achieve technical objectives.
- Mentorship: Ability to provide peer review and career guidance for more junior staff, including students as to how to improve work practices and execution.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency in the design and deployment of custom electronic solutions using a combination of both commercial components as well as custom electronics via project and technical work.
- Demonstrated proficiency with any of Altium Designer, Siemens Xpedition, and/or AutoCAD electrical to develop electronic product definitions for fabrication and installation.
- Demonstrated experience developing custom firmware/software for specialized application using Xilinx Vivado, National Instruments LabVIEW, or Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 platforms.
- Experience with the use of electrical fabrication such as component assembly, cable fabrication, soldering and multimeters in order to troubleshoot electronic system designs/functionality.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
