This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture products in support of Nuclear Deterrence. The majority of daily work is "hands-on" glove box work in the purification and generation of actinide oxides and metals involving Pu239/242, or Am241, or U235 and the processing of residues for eventual disposal to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant(WIPP). Chemical and material processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures that utilizes extensive knowledge and expertise in following good Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety and environmental compliance requirements.
In this role you will use the principles and theories of chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering to solve technical problems in support of engineering for Materials Recovery and Recycle (MR&R) in the Strategic Materials and Directed Stockpile Work programs at LANL. The successful candidate will support engineering and projects in the development of tooling and equipment for various projects in our development and production areas. Typical processes that are performed include reverse engineering, and process development assistance. Responsibilities will entail equipment installation and production support for these processes. The successful candidate will work closely with other LANL design and fabrication personnel to ensure that these products are compatible for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. All documentation that is developed will meet nuclear conduct of operations requirements and meet the quality requirements of our diverse customer-base. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently; work as part of a team; and contribute to continuous process improvements to meet customer requirements.
R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)
You will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Serve as a contributing member of an MR&R process to address engineering challenges.
- Contribute to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D and operations initiatives.
- Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs and process improvements for existing operations.
- Ensure programmatic objectives through engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
- Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings to coworkers and management personnel.
- Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary groups throughout the laboratory.
- Participate in professional development and mentorship opportunities to enhance your engineering career.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrated through experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
- Demonstrated analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and executing experiments, including analyzing and interpreting data. This includes a commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables.
- Experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing a complete project, system, or component through courses or experience.
- The ability to work independently and with a team in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds and the ability to express ideas clearly, and in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering or related science, 2 years of job-related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, and quality requirements.
- Advanced Knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Conduct of Operations.
- Willingness to take initiative on new tasks or projects
- Design to manufacturing experience
- Technical writing consisting of project proposals, technical research, and summary presentations.
- Active HRP certification.
- Active DOE Q clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
