What You Will Do



This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Complex Response Solutions Group (A-5) is searching for a high-performing technical leader who wants to make an immediate difference to national security. Programmatic funding is expanding rapidly in core capability areas related to Nuclear Incident Response and Counterterrorism / Counter Proliferation Sciences. Projects will be conducted at Q and SCI level.

R&D Engineer 3 $115,500 - $194,900

The successful candidate will lead programs in support of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and Office of Nuclear Threat Science (NA-82). The candidate will work closely with the Laboratoriy's Global Security Directorate (ALDGS) program offices on budget, planning, and execution. The selected candidate shall possess experience in Weapons Engineering, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and be capable of providing technical leadership to a multi-diciplinary team. They will also represent LANL at regularly scheduled program reviews and work collaboratively with their LLNL and SNL counter-parts. Additionally, the selected candidate would periodically participate in hands-on activities including hardware development, design, fabrication, and assembly.

R&D Engineer 4 $138,700 - $240,500

In addition to the R&D Engineer 3 level, the R&D Engineer 4 level will be expected to independently develop and direct projects, build teams across the Laboratory, and communicate at the highest levels with sponsor organizations and internal to LANL. They will serve as a technical mentor to early- and mid-career staff and represent group management as needed.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles to provide solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering. Demonstrated ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications. Functional knowledge of nuclear weapon systems in regards to design, production, and operation.
  • Experience providing costs and schedule estimates for existing and new projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multi-disciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of National Security Enterprise (NSE) personnel including internal and external customers to provide solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience mentoring less experienced personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to team with other personnel across the NSE and present work objectives and results at all levels to internal and external management and customers.

Education/Experience:

R&D Engineer 3:

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

R&D Engineer 4:

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) mission scope.
  • Functional knowledge of US Stockpile Weapon systems (B61, W76, W78, and W88) in regards to design, production, and operation.
  • Experience with CAD (e.g. Creo), document management systems (e.g. PDM Link) and applications to stockpile product definition.
  • Familiarity with principles associated with the design, development, fabrication, and assembly of a component or system.
  • Experience with prototype fabrication and /or ability to lead a team of fabrication SMEs to realize prototype hardware.
  • Familairity with relevant classification guidance and willingness to become an authorized Derivative Classifier (DC).
  • Active Q and SCI clearances.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
