What You Will Do

The Weapon Product Definition (W-11) Group is looking for First Line Managers (FLM) to serve at the team level to assist the Group Leader and Deputy Group Leader and to support the mission of the group and division. The FLM will establish a vision and path for the future for the team by ensuring the timely and successful delivery of solutions. The position will also have line management responsibility for areas within Mechanical Engineering, Requirements Engineering, and Mechanical and Electro/Mechanical Computer Aided Design.

The position requires proficient collaboration and communication skills for working closely with the W-11 Group Office on budget preparation, staffing plan development, and execution on a variety of programmatic deliverables. This includes establishing detailed program/project plans, report on milestones and deliverables, and provide direction of technical staff to ensure Directed Stockpile Work (DSW) and Campaign deliverables are met as planned.

The position requires technical leadership and demonstrated teamwork with multi-disciplinary teams consisting of system engineers, physicists, technicians, designers, and CAD operators. You must also be able to effectively exercise line management of personnel providing mentorship and promoting personnel development. You will apply a broad range of knowledge of hardware design, fabrication, and engineering practices. You will be responsible for all aspects of personnel management, including but not limited to: managing headcount, forecasting and budget(s) associated with group, directing assignments, employee hiring and onboarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff including annual performance discussions, identification of growth opportunities, and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership

Demonstrated successful leadership of technical projects and personnel. Excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution. Demonstrated successful teamwork and consensus building consistent with appropriate delegation, the ability to team, collaborate, or integrate across program lines to accomplish larger program goals. Experience in mentoring others.

Technical Competence

Demonstrated experience in Mechanical Design and Engineering, specifically with Nuclear Weapon Project Definition, Configuration Management of project definition including 3D models, drawings, specifications, and Engineering Authorizations (EAs). Demonstrated experience using and administering design definition product life-cycle software packages. Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and related standards.

Education/Experience

Position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience using and administering Creo and PDMLink software packages
  • Experience with multiple and various output platforms (i.e., drawings, specifications, models)
  • Experience with Additive Manufacturing solutions/capabilities
  • Experience with Requirements Engineering Management (REM) software & processes
  • Experience with Engineering Authorization tools and processes
  • Experience with Document Configuration Management tools and processes
  • Experience with design staff supporting Models Based Design, the NSE Models Based Integrated Team (MBIT), and/or any NNSA Models Based System Engineering efforts
  • Active Q-clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
