Research Technologist 1/2 (Static High Pressure Laboratory Manager/Research Specialist)

What You Will Do

The Static High Pressure Team in the Shock & Detonation Physics Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for an Experimental High Pressure Laboratory Manager and Research Specialist. Our team is engaged in fundamental and applied static high pressure experimental science in support of a variety of US DOE NNSA missions. We use traditional and novel diagnostics of materials compressed and heated in diamond anvil cells and large volume presses to study properties such as material phase diagrams, equation of state, sound speeds and elasticity, strength and the kinetics of phase transitions. The successful candidate is expected to be involved in all aspects of our team's work from experimental design to sample synthesis/preparation and experiment execution.

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 1 $79,200-$129,000

  • Design of, and generation of engineering drawings for, custom tooling and experimental apparatus. Interfacing with machine shops to have parts fabricated.
  • Preparation of equipment and samples for diamond anvil cell and large volume press experiments.
  • Participation in team experiments performed on-site at LANL and at external light source user facilities.
  • General oversight of our diamond anvil cell and large volume press laboratory facilities, including: installation and training on new equipment; maintenance of existing equipment; interfacing with safety, security, and waste management personnel external to our team.

Research Technologist 2 $87,200 - $142,500

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a hire at the Technologist 2 level will be expected to contribute to data analysis and dissemination of scientific results through the writing of papers and technical reports. A Technologist 2 will be expected to work with less day-to-day supervision than a Technologist 1 and will independently interface with external vendors and other stakeholders.

  • The ability to participate in regular travel (~1 week/month) to domestic and international experimental facilities.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • A proven track record of laboratory management, specifically in: 1) the coordination and scheduling of multiple concurrent experiments, 2) facility organization and maintenance, and 3) keeping equipment maintained and consumables stocked.
  • Demonstrated experience with 3D modeling software, e.g. SolidWorks, and the generation of professional mechanical drawings OR experience with writing programs in LabVIEW or Python for instrument control and data acquisition.
  • A familiarity with common experimental apparatus and techniques, e.g. oscilloscopes, arbitrary function generators, multi-meters, X-ray diffraction.

Education/Experience for Technologist 1: Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or an engineering discipline plus 2 years related experience.

Education/Experience for Technologist 2: Bachelor's or Master's (preferred) degree in the physical sciences or an engineering discipline. If Bachelor's, 5 years of relevant work experience is also required. If Master's 2 years relevant work experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with high pressure experimental apparatus, including diamond anvil cells or large volume hydraulic presses.
  • Experience machining simple parts using mills, lathes, drill presses, etc.
  • Active DOE Q Clearance.
