As a technologist, one would perform technical work requiring advanced knowledge in the area of science or engineering. Focused assignments are usually portions of the total design or research project and require technical depth and understanding. Research Technologists contribute to the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives. As part of a research team you will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports to sponsors, or technical publications. Research Technologists may have responsibility for safety/security envelope for projects, the team, or the group. Work will include systems which may have hazards involving high consequences for safety such as, high energy capacitor banks, X-ray systems, gas pressure/vacuum systems, and radiological containment. Work will be related to national security objectives, requiring the individual to hold a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
Research Technologist 3 ($106,400- $176,000)
- Develops new techniques, concepts, experimental design and/or innovative/effective solutions to complex problems especially as related to new equipment upgrades, installations, testing, and upkeep.
- May resolve problems of moderately complex scope requiring integration of data across a breadth of technical areas.
- Works under minimal consultative direction toward pre-determined long-range goals and objectives. This work is checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than formal review by a superior.
- Acts as lead reviewing activities of personnel, ensures work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
- Develops specifications for complex projects, oversees the implementation and ensures the end product meets expectations and requirements.
- Prepares research documentation and provides peer-review of documentation from other members of the team.
- Develops ideas and components of research/production documentation and proposals.
- Is frequent author/co-author of peer reviewed publications and contributes significantly to proposals.
- Leads a small team of technologists, technicians and newer engineers in their experimental/ technical work with respect to new equipment installation projects.
- Develops specifications for system/equipment design and/or production processes.This is to include maintenance and upkeep documentation as it relates to the systems and equipment designs.
- Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
- Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
- May perform role as safety officer or other work-related responsibility at group or division level.
Research Technologist 4 ($117,200-$195,400)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower Technologist 3 level
- Independently develops new techniques, concepts, experimental design and/or innovative/effective solutions to complex problems in area of specialty equipment.
- Leads the resolution of unique or unusually complex or unique technical problems requiring analysis and interpretation of multiple, sometimes incomplete, data sets.
- Develops new principles and concepts as well as provides approval for principles and concepts developed by other team members.
- Perform assignments involving total design, requiring a high degree of technical expertise, and coordination of dependent and independent technical contributors.
- Contributions have a very substantial impact on project goals and institutional interests and might lead to failure to reach goals critical to organizational objectives; conversely, incorrect technical decisions cause significant delays to completion and substantial additional costs to projects, with significant impact to sponsor relationship.
- Provides supervision and direction toward pre-determined long-range goals and objectives.
- Initiates assignments for self and others. Checks work of others through consultation and agreement.
- Responsible for developing or validating specifications for very complex, multi-tiered project implementations, and verifying that the end product meets expectations and requirements.
- Develops ideas and components to the production of research documentation.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of scientific principles, experimental processes, computations, and data gathering methods.
- Demonstrated advanced-level knowledge of and experience in writing and implementing procedures, standards and guides.
- Moderate experience covering either a large project or several smaller projects contributing to an overall program.
Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:
- Demonstrated advanced/expert knowledge in installation, testing, and upkeep of specialized or often custom equipment related to NDE acquired by experience, certification and/or formal education
- Demonstrated advanced-level experience covering either a large project or several smaller projects contributing to an overall program.
Education/Experience:
Research Technologist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Research Technologist 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced-level knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards and criteria pertinent to NDE equipment and mechanical processing.
- Demonstrate technical leadership in developing advanced concepts in their area of expertise.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Work Schedule:
This position may/will require 24/7 coverage, which could/will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
