This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The job responsibilities of each level are outlined below and will be assigned according to the level assessed during candidate selection.
The Research Technologist works on a team of engineers, designers, and scientists to develop solutions to challenging problems in national security.
Work will potentially include multiple hazards, and require working under Integrated Work Documents. The successful candidate must understand and adhere to policy governing the work.
Research Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)
The successful candidate will:
- Demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn and develop skills in technical areas to include but not limited to, manual and/or CNC machining.
- Maintain and oversee the use of tools, equipment, and consumable parts stocked for use by the group.
- Conduct technical work in accordance with industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA Complex code standards and criteria.
- Work interactively with engineering staff, designers, and scientists across the lab to ensure successful and timely completion of project tasks.
- Be willing to travel and occasionally work extended hours.
- Assist with the shipping and receiving of classified parts.
- Have a commitment to housekeeping and keeping an orderly shop
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technologist 3 will be required to:
- Proficient with manual and CNC machining techniques and equipment
- Mentor and train junior staff members in development of technical skills listed above.
- Machine complex parts independently from prepared mechanical design packages
- Work with customers to refine rough design ideas into finished parts
- Lead the shipping and receiving of classified parts.
- Help to establish safety/security boundaries and ensure project staff remains within those boundaries throughout a project cycle.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Research Technologist 2
- Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the focus areas listed below through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in the following:
- CNC Machining
- Work with customers to arrive at an achievable design
- Work involving hazardous materials
- Work involving classified parts/materials
- Demonstrated experience working with powered hand tools to assemble or modify hardware.
- Demonstrated knowledge of standards and criteria pertinent to area of technical expertise.
- Demonstrated experience working on dynamic and time sensitive projects.
- Demonstrated supervision of projects and personnel.
- Demonstrated experience providing time or cost estimates for projects.
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q and SCI clearances, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship
Research Technologist 3
In addition to the requirements outlined above, the Research Technologist 3 must:
- Have demonstrated, applied expertise in three or more of the focus areas listed below through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in the following:
- CNC machining
- Manual machining
- Work involving hazardous materials
- Work involving classified parts/materials
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Have a successful record of working with external customers on multiple projects.
- Demonstrated success acting as quality control for project deliverables.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active Q/SCI clearance
- Experience working with quick turnaround and/or high visibility projects
- Experience with classified computing
- Experience working with external vendors for parts or prototype fabrication
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software (Solidworks/Mastercam)
- Knowledge of mechanical fabrication techniques (CNC milling, CNC lathe, EDM, etc.)
- Knowledge of laboratory purchasing practices (ex. PRs, BOAs, RRBs)
- Qualified for forklift and crane operations.
Education:
Research Technologist 2: The position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Research Technologist 3: The position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training or education is desired.

Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
