Scientist in Applied Mathematics and Meshing Methods (Scientist 2)

What You Will Do

The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group isseeking a qualified candidate to hire as R&D Scientist 2 on its AppliedMath and Numerical Methods Research Team. The scientist will initially work primarilyon conservative multi-material remapping, interface reconstruction andsmoothing algorithms on parallel unstructured meshes and particle swarmsapplied to Arbitrary-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) simulations at scale. This includeswork on a variety of software projects including, Portage (https://laristra.github.io/portage/). The successful candidate is expected to expand their own independent researchprogram as they develop in their career.

Thecandidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment withsubstantial collaborative research. Thisincludes recruiting and mentoring students and postdocs and contributing toresearch proposals. The successfulcandidate is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals, present theirresearch at conferences and workshops, and contribute to software repositories.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


  • Proven publication record in one or more of the following areas: applied mathematics, computational geometry, or scientific computing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex software projects including software with distributed or shared parallelism
  • Experience with modern software engineering practices including version control, build systems, and regression testing
  • Demonstrated experience with numerical methods for unstructured polyhedral meshes
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary scientific environment
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written skills through a record of publications and presentations

Education/Experience: A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field. One or more years of research experience post Ph.D.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with multi-material ALE simulations
  • Experience in particle based methods for 3D simulations
  • Experience with conservative remapping
  • Programming experience with C++
  • GPU programming experience
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students or postdocs
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.
