Protect innovation and be the backbone of national security at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)! The Security Incidents Team (SIT) is looking for an Inquiry Official to fill a vital role in the Security Programs Division upholding safeguards and security policy for the lab. Inquiry Officials on the SIT aim to determine security compromises and the level of national security, causal factors, and recommended improvements specific to each situation. Incidents or events that an Inquiry Official may be involved in include those posing threats to national security interest and/or critical DOE assets, those that create potentially serious or dangerous security situations, potential endangerment of the health and safety of the workforce or public, those that degrade effectiveness of LANL's security program, or those that adversely impact the ability of organizations to protect DOE interests. This position will be filled at either the Security Specialist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Security Specialist 2 ($67,000 - $107,700)
At the security Specialist 2 level, specific roles, responsibilities and expectations are likely to include:
- Perform inquiries into incidents of national security concern in accordance with DOE Order 470.4B Attachment 5 "Incidents of Security Concern" and LANL directives using advanced inquiry techniques.
- Responsible for scheduling, coordinating and conducting inquiries into violations of DOE and LANL security policy.
- Interview personnel involved or associated with security incidents and gather related documentation.
- Effectively interact with all levels of LANL management and employees.
- Write objective inquiry reports ensuring appropriate classifications and guidelines are adhered to and reporting timelines are met.
- Prepare the written content of security incidents for submittal to the DOE's Safeguards and Security Information Management System (SSIMS).
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Security Specialist 3 may:
- Reviews incidents of security concern (IOSC) processes and conducts on-site assessments to ensure specifications meet security needs.
- Independently plans, directs, and/or conducts IOSC incidents. Brief customers and security and safeguard management on findings.
- Interact diplomatically with various LANL organizations while ensuring security compliance.
- Identify potentially more effective methods of work operation.
What You Will Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Experience investigating and reporting security incidents.
- Knowledge of law enforcement, intelligence, and/or public or private sector security organizations.
- Demonstrated interviewing skills and techniques and the ability to prepare concise, objective reports.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and objective security reports; assuring classification levels are determined and appropriately marked.
- Advanced experience investigating and reporting security incidents.
- Advanced knowledge of law enforcement, intelligence, and/or public or private sector security organizations.
- Advanced interviewing skills and techniques and the ability to prepare concise, objective reports.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and objective security reports; assuring classification levels are determined and appropriately marked.
- Advanced experience and demonstrated skill conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions on problems affecting incidents of security concern.
- Comprehensive understanding of DOE and LANL security and safeguards requirements, policies, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting security and safeguards.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Documented DOE security inquiry training certification.
- Knowledge and understanding of DOE regulations and LANS policies, procedures and practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of classified document and CREM handling, marking and protection.
- Demonstrated ability operate cohesively and professionally within the SIT as well as with outside organizations.
- Active Q-clearance
Note to Applicants: This position may require the need to be on call outside normal reporting hours.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
