What You Will Do

Sigma-2, Finishing Manufacturing Science, is looking for a highly motivated machinist to work with existing staff to support R&D component manufacturing within the Machining and Inspection (M&I) Team. The M&I Team boasts a fully equipped machine shop, including multiple new machines and an inspection lab. Highlights of the machine shop capabilities include manual and CNC turning, manual and CNC milling, wire electrical discharge machining, 3D printing and waterjet cutting. The M&I Team supports Foundry and Deformation Processing operations, as well as Welding and Joining. The successful applicant will join the Sigma staff to perform manufacturing operations, primarily machining, on a wide range of materials, including some unique special materials with specific hazards (radiation, toxicity, etc.), to produce high quality components and subassemblies in support of production/experimental programs as well as special projects.

This position will be filled at either the Special Materials Machinist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Special Materials Machinist 3 ($ 65,700 - $ 104,400)

The successful candidate will perform the job activities listed below, but are not limited to:
  • Follow safety and security documents and policies
  • Perform precision measurements using hand tools to ensure quality requirements are met
  • Use of hand tools and supporting shop equipment, setup and operation of CNC and other manual equipment (lathes, mills, grinders, waterjets, etc) with little to no supervision.
  • Create CAD/CAM files or G&M code
  • Manufacture complex parts from drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions
  • Performing machining of materials in gloveboxes on small CNC machines
  • Use of classified computing for programming of machine tools
  • Operation of crane and forklifts

Special Materials Machinist 4 ($ 79,200 - $ 129,000)

In addition to those outlined above, the Special Materials Machinist 4 responsibilities will include:
  • Review designs and advise on part manufacturability, cost, and schedule
  • Documentation of work performed. Reporting of results to supervisor or customers orally or in writing
  • Training and mentoring of others

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Skilled/fully proficient level. Applies knowledge of the job, and company policies and principles to complete a wide range of tasks. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines
  • Leadership and ability to follow guidelines for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment
  • Skilled knowledge of applied shop mathematics
  • Fully proficient understanding of machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances
  • Fully proficient knowledge of applied material properties
  • Fully proficient knowledge and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Skilled ability performing precision measurements
  • Skilled ability to setup and operate manual equipment, CNC equipment, hand tools and supporting shop equipment with little to no supervision
  • Skilled ability to create CAD/CAM files (such as Camworks, MasterCam, etc. or G&M code
  • Skilled ability to manufacture complex parts made from difficult materials with exacting tolerances
  • Willingness to work with radioactive materials and other hazardous materials
  • Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team

Additional Minimum Job Requirements for Special Materials Machinist 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, the higher level position will require:
  • Senior skilled level; has demonstrated skills and knowledge beyond those expected to be found at the journeyman level. Applies extensive knowledge and skills to complete specialized tasks and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Comprehensive understanding of general and technical aspects of the job
  • Experience with 5-axis CNC machining
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining equipment
  • Ability to read and understand new procedures and protocols toward long-range goals
  • Ability to review designs and advise on part manufacturability, cost and schedule
  • Ability to train and mentor others

Education/Experience Special Materials Machinist 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 4 year's related experience; OR 6 year's prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 4 years of experience.

Education/Experience Special Materials Machinist 4:Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program AND 6 years of experience; OR 8 years prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 6 years of experience.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience in machining hazardous materials and handling classified matter
  • Crane and forklift operator
  • Ability to acquire and maintain rigorous training as required, defined, and provided by LANL/Sigma
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
