As a Waste Management Coordinator, you are front-line subject matter expert of waste operations across the extensive footprint of Los Alamos National Laboratory. As a Waste Management Coordinator, the selected candidate will be responsible for providing a turnkey customer focused approach to waste management to include characterization, processing, packaging, storage, and disposal of solid and liquid RCRA hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, biological waste, New Mexico Special Waste, Universal Waste, PCB Waste and Radioactive Waste.

Through specialized skills, knowledge and understanding of waste operations, WMCs provide cradle to grave operational control and oversight that ensures compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Department of Energy (DOE) 435.1, Radioactive Waste Management, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, that allows Laboratories facility and field operations to focus on their mission critical work. The WMC is critical to the development of the organization's goals and objectives while working closely with first-line managers, customers, and peers to resolve wide-ranging challenges in creative ways while maintaining safety, security, and compliance requirements.



What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to implementing safety, security, environment and quality objectives and requirements
  • Practical work experience with a laboratory or high hazard facility/environment that generated multiple waste types
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling and management of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes
  • Ability to effectively communicate, interact, and work with internal customers as well as with Federal, State, and local agencies
  • Experience or training per DOT 49 CFR as a Basic Hazardous Materials Shipper and Basic Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Hazardous Materials Shipper and Advanced Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Mixed Waste Shipper
  • Knowledge of and experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes
  • Knowledge and experience in managing satellite accumulation areas (SAAs), central accumulation areas (CAAs), PCB storage areas, universal waste (UW) areas, and radioactive staging/storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling
  • Experience and knowledge communicating major elements of waste management processes, policies, and procedures to technical and non-technical personnel


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active or transferable L/Q clearance
  • Successful experience in coordinating cradle to grave management and disposition of non-hazardous, hazardous, chemical, and radioactive wastes
  • Knowledge of LANL's organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities
  • Experience and knowledge of LANL's waste management policies, practices, and procedures
  • Current or previous qualification as a waste professional in a Department of Energy facility
  • Chemical lab packing experience

Work Environment:

  • General work environment may include but is not limited to: outdoors, working alone, working extended shifts, operation of motor vehicles, operation of specialized heavy equipment (i.e. forklift), R&D laboratory settings with corresponding chemicals and hazards


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
