The Group Leader (GL) for WRS-SNA provides both leadership and management for technical and administrative work. The GL is responsible for working with groups and divisions within Weapons Physics, Weapons Engineering, Weapons Production, the Office of the Chief Information Officer, Infrastructure Services Division, Counterintelligence, and Global Security to ensure the security of the classified networks, weapons applications, and operational technology (OT).

The GL collaborates closely with external partners across academia, the NNSA's Nuclear Enterprise Assurance (NEA), and the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). In addition to providing cybersecurity assurance, the GL leads a team of specialized software developers responsible for creating and implementing setup codes for physics modeling and other unique tools that support classified weapons software systems. The GL plays a key role in fostering staff development, sustaining and advancing technological capabilities, and ensuring the continued growth of professional expertise within the group. They are responsible for developing strategies that encourage staff engagement in applying new capabilities to advance the Laboratory's mission. Administrative responsibilities include oversight of safeguards and security, integrated work management, performance appraisals, compensation management, human resources coordination, staff planning and forecasting, as well as financial management and accountability.

Leadership and Organizational Management
The position requires a demonstrated record of successful leadership within a line organization, including performance and salary management, budgeting, team organization, staff development, recruitment, and conflict resolution. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience and willingness to make staffing decisions that support not only the needs of individual programs and groups but also advance the overall objectives of the division, with careful consideration of the broader impacts of those decisions. Strong project management skills are essential, with a proven ability to lead technical initiatives to completion on time and within budget through effective planning, execution, and delivery.

Communication and Collaboration
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey complex technical and organizational concepts in both written and verbal formats. The candidate must be able to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals, committees, and a wide range of audiences across disciplines and organizational levels.

Commitment Safety, Security, and Quality
The role demands a demonstrated commitment to safety, security, environmental stewardship, and quality assurance, ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.

Technical Experience and Analytical Skills
A high level of technical expertise is required, including strong knowledge of open and secure workstations, servers, and network environments. The candidate must possess advanced skills in conceptualizing and articulating key aspects of network and application security. Professional-level experience in conducting research, assessing alternative solutions, and recommending effective strategies for complex computer and information security challenges is also essential.

Policy Knowledge and Compliance
The position requires a comprehensive understanding of federal government computer and information security policies, practices, and procedures. The successful candidate will also demonstrate experience in developing staff growth opportunities and aligning resources to meet mission objectives in compliance with institutional and federal standards.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering or related technical area
  • Comprehensive understanding of Department of Energy and LANL computer and information security practices
  • Experience working within LANL's Weapons Programs
  • Practical knowledge of LANL business systems, operational and work processes, administrative practices and procedures, and key Laboratory points of contact
  • Experience and knowledge in the field of cyber security
  • Active Q clearance
  • Active TS-SCI clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
